BOSTON – Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg posted a 59-save shutout to stymie the Northeastern women's hockey team (6-8-3) in a 1-0 decision on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.

The Huskies attempted 119 shots in the game– 59 on goal, 37 blocked by the defense, 23 wide– but could not solve Lundberg, who helped Union earn its second win of the season (2-10-2). Lundberg stopped 22 shots in the first period, 18 in the second, and 19 in third as the Huskies posted their highest single-game shot total since joining Hockey East in 2002. 

Northeastern also dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 40 of 55 draws (73-percent), led by redshirt junior Lucie Povova (12-for-16), junior Kendall Coyne (11-for-14), sophomore Melissa Haganey (8-for-12) and freshman Christina Zalewski (8-for-10). 

Senior Chloe Desjardins made 23 saves for Northeastern and was the hard-luck loser in a game dominated by the Huskies from start to finish. 

Kathryn Tomaselli netted the only goal of the contest at the 15:23 mark of the first period. After some hard work by Nicole Russell to win a loose puck in the Huskies' zone, Tomaselli scooped up the disc in the right circle and fired a shot by Desjardins to give Lundberg and the Dutchwomen all the offensive support they would need.

The Huskies' best chance of the opening frame came just before the four-minute mark when sophomore Hayley Masters slipped a feed behind Lundberg, across the crease to freshman Halle Silva. The rookie appeared to have an open net in front of her, but the puck bounced at the right post and Silva could not jam it home.

Silva produced another excellent chance midway through the second period when she collected a pass between the circles and rifled a shot that Lundberg kicked to the corner.

Desjardins then matched Lundberg with a great save of her own, sliding post-to-post to deny Hannah Erickson on a 2-on-1 bid late in the frame.

Northeastern threw all it had at the Union net in the third period, but could not find a way through. Early in the frame, Coyne set up Zalewski for a one-timer from point-blank range, but again Lundberg was in position for the stop.

Then, in the waning seconds, Zalewski won a draw back to junior Jordan Krause for a hard shot that Lundberg blocked to the corner to preserve the shutout and help Union to its first win over NU in seven tries (1-6-0).

The Huskies will have nearly a month off before their next game on Dec. 31 against Dartmouth at Matthews Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
