ALBANY, N.Y. – The Northeastern Huskies held off a late surge from the Albany Great Danes to secure their first road victory of the season, 70-67, on Sunday, Dec. 28.

The win also brings an end to a five-game skid for Northeastern.

The action picked up with 4:31 left in the second half and the game tied, 59-59. The Huskies relied on veteran leadership over the game's final minutes to earn the win. Senior guard A'lece Mark grabbed a rebound off her own missed shot and converted a lay-up to put the Huskies back up by two. The teams then traded buckets over the next two minutes and found themselves tied once again, 63-63, with 2:25 left.

Albany made a lay-up to take its first lead of the second half, but a Tiffany Montagne 3-pointer gave the Huskies the lead again, this time for good. Northeastern (3-6, 0-0) would not allow Albany (7-5, 0-0) to tie or take the lead over the final 90 seconds, a result of tough defense and tenacity. After an intentional foul, senior captain Amencie Mercier made two free throws with 19 seconds left to wrap up the victory.

This is the third straight game for NU that the final possession has decided the outcome. After dropping two close games to New Hampshire and Harvard, head coach Kelly Cole's squad dug deep and played its best basketball when it mattered most to beat Albany.

The Huskies had five different members of the team reach double-figures in scoring, all five of who finished shooting 50 percent or better from the floor.

Mark finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season; Mercier pitched in 14 points and seven assists; Montagne finished with 13 points, three assists and three rebounds; Samantha DeFreese added 12 points and five boards; and Francesca Sally recorded 13 points and seven rebounds.

The win marks Northeastern's best shooting performance of the season. The team connected on 28-of-51 shots for a shooting percentage of 54.9 from the floor. NU also connected on six of its 13 attempts from downtown, paced by Montagne going three-of-seven from beyond the arc.

Despite a slow start, the first half ultimately proved to be one of the strongest opening 20 minutes the Huskies have had all season. The team shot 40 percent from the floor, connecting on 11-of-27, including four-of-eight from downtown. Six different Huskies recorded at least one point. Cole's squad won several important battles, including out-rebounding Albany by a 21-15 margin.

Mercier led the charge for NU, accounting for 12 points, two assists and one rebound.  Behind the senior was Montagne, who scored eight first-half points. Her success came from behind the arc, where she went two-of-five.

Northeastern now turns its attention to a New Years Eve matchup against crosstown rival Boston College. The Huskies and Eagles will tip-off at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Following the 2014 finale, the Huskies open the 2015 calendar year on the road against Drexel and Hofstra. NU meets Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 4, and then travels to Hofstra for a showdown on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
