CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior
Chloe Desjardins (Saint-Prosper, Quebec) made 27 saves, but the Northeastern women's hockey team (14-13-2) fell short in its bid for a third straight Women's Beanpot title in a 3-0 loss to No. 7/7 Boston College on Tuesday at Conte Forum.
In a rematch of the 2013 Final, the Eagles (21-5-3) grabbed the lead late in the first period and added two power-play goals in the third to claim their fifth Women's Beanpot title and first since 2011. Taylor Wasylk, who netted the game-winner at the 16:02 mark of the opening period, was named the tournament MVP, while BC's Corinne Boyles (25 saves) took home the Bertagna Award for the most outstanding goaltender.
Using an aggressive forecheck to pin the Huskies deep in their own zone, the Eagles generated numerous scoring chances throughout the game, but could not pull away due in large part to the play of Desjardins. The NU netminder was strong throughout and kept the Huskies in the contest until BC struck for two goals in a span of 4:52 late in the third to turn a one-goal game into a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The Eagles went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage and held a 30-25 edge in shots. Northeastern came up empty on its three power-play opportunities, despite coming close in the second period when a
Hayley Scamurra (Williamsville, N.Y.) shot hit the post with BC in front, 1-0.
The Huskies dodged a major bullet in the opening minutes of the game when senior
Sonia St. Martin (Pierrefonds, Quebec) made a pair of goal-saving defensive plays. Desjardins initially made a stop on Kate Leary in tight, but the puck squeezed by and trickled dangerously toward the goal line. St. Martin hustled to the spot to scoop it out of danger, but the clearance fell right to Emily Pfalzer with an open net in front of her. Pfalzer unleashed a quick shot, but St. Martin reacted with a brilliant kick save to prevent a sure goal, before blocking another shot on the follow-up chance by Wasylk.
Desjardins then made a pair of huge stops five minutes later, denying Andie Anastos on a 2-on-1, before somehow blocking Emily Field's rebound attempt while lying flat on her stomach in the crease.
Northeastern produced its first quality scoring chance midway through the opening period when senior
Katie MacSorley (Stratford, Ontario) tested Boyles with a deflection on a shot from between the circles. Boyles then rose to the occasion seconds later with a glove save on a
Brittany Esposito (Edmonton, Alberta) wrister from the left circle.
The Eagles' forecheck eventually forced the game's first goal at the 16:02 mark when Wasylk picked off a pass at the right circle and sniped a shot inside the left post, under the arm of Desjardins to put BC in front, 1-0.
Boston College came close to doubling the advantage early in the second, but Desjardins stood tall with a series of tremendous saves. The Huskies' netminder shut down Haley Skarupa on a 1-on-1 chance in tight on a BC power play, before stopping Skarupa once again seconds later on a one-timer in the low slot.
Northeastern stepped up its play in the latter stages of the stanza and kept the Eagles on their heels in the defensive zone. Freshman
Hayley Masters (Shanty Bay, Ontario) came close to knotting things up at the 8:20 mark when she gained the BC zone with speed and let loose a wrister that zipped just wide of the right post. Scamurra then beat Boyles with a turnaround shot from the right circle on a power play, but the puck struck the left post and stayed out.
Desjardins kept the deficit at 1-0 in the final minute of the second period with a huge kick-save on a Skarupa wrister as the teams retreated to the locker room in a one-goal game.
Northeastern registered the first eight shots of the third period, but Boyles was up to the task. The BC netminder made a nice kick-save on a
Kelly Wallace (Libertyville, Ill.) backhand attempt at the 16:10 mark, before catching a break when Wallace fired a shot just wide from the low slot just over two minutes later.
The Eagles padded their lead at 10:23 of the final period with a power-play tally from Meagan Mangene. After a faceoff win by Field, Anastos tossed the puck back to the left point to Mangene. The BC defenseman took two strides toward the net before unleashing a hard wrister over the glove of Desjardins to make it 2-0 BC.
The hosts tacked on a third goal at the 15:15 mark when Melissa Bizzari beat Desjardins from a tough angle through the five-hole.
Boston College then ran out the clock to bring an end to Northeastern's seven-game winning streak and two-year Beanpot title reign.
The Huskies return to action this weekend, Feb. 15-16, for a pair of home games against Connecticut. Opening faceoff on both days is set for 2 p.m.
