Red-hot offense leads Northeastern past William & Mary, 78-57

Box Score

BOSTON—A'lece Mark and Jewel Tunstull logged 20-point games to lead the Northeastern women's basketball team (10-14, 4-7 CAA) to a 78-57 victory over William & Mary (5-17, 2-8 CAA) on Thursday night at Cabot Center.

Mark led all scorers with 21 points, good for her fifth individual 20-point game of the season, and five assists. Tunstull logged 20 points for her third consecutive 20-point contest and added eight rebounds. Samantha DeFreese recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds to collect her fourth double-double of the year. Kazzidy Stewart notched eight points, Amencie Mercier and Tiffany Montagne tallied five points apiece, and Sade Iriah contributed one point to round out the scoring column for the Huskies.

Marlena Tremba led the Tribe with 18 points, while Kyla Kersetter and Kaitlyn Mathieu joined their teammate in double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

William & Mary got on the board first with a shot from beyond the arc, but that was the only lead it would hold for the remainder of the contest. Northeastern responded with the next two buckets, including DeFreese's first 3-pointer of the night. The Tribe evened the score with a jumper, but a Mark trey triggered a 12-0 NU run to give the Huskies an early 17-5 advantage.

W&M strung together consecutive threes to come within six points in the seventh minute of play, but Northeastern held the Tribe scoreless over the next three minutes, while posting an 11-0 surge to go ahead 28-11. The teams exchanged baskets during the core of the frame before a layup from Tunstull gave the Huskies a 20-point advantage with 4:19 left in the first half. Mark logged five of NU's final seven points of the stanza to send the Huskies into intermission, 49-26.

DeFreese led all scorers through the first half, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and logging 16 points. As a team, Northeastern connected on 69 percent (18-26) of its shots and held the Tribe to shooting just 30 percent (8-27).

The second half started with back-and-forth scoring action as neither team could string together consecutive shots. William & Mary attempted to chip away at its deficit, but could not get closer than 17 points for the rest of the way.

With the score at 67-50 in the 32nd minute, a Mark free throw kicked off an 8-0 run to give the Huskies a 26-point lead with 2:29 left to play. In the final minutes, W&M outshot NU, 7-2, but it was not enough to stop the Huskies from running away with a 78-57 victory.

For the game, Northeastern shot 55 percent (28-51) from the field, 43 percent (9-21) from 3-point range, and 65 percent (13-20) from the free-throw line. The Tribe shot 32 percent (19-59) from the floor, 29 percent (5-17) from beyond the arc, and 86 percent (14-16) from the charity stripe. The Huskies won the rebounding battle, 37-31.

The Huskies will enjoy a week off before heading to Hempstead, N.Y., on Thursday, Feb. 20, for their second meeting with Hofstra this season.
