Highlights
BOSTON – Boston University (9-20-4, 4-12-2) used a two-goal first period and drew seven penalties on the No. 9/9 Northeastern men's ice hockey team (18-11-4, 10-7-2) to skate to a 4-1 victory on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
Despite the loss, the Huskies still clinch a first-round bye in the Hockey East playoffs following outcomes from around the league, and can finish either in third, fourth, or fifth place in the final standings heading in to Saturday's regular season finale. A win or tie tomorrow would guarantee NU home ice for the quarterfinal round.
Braden Pimm scored the lone goal for the Huskies, his 19th of the season, while
Clay Witt had 23 saves in goal. The Terriers received goals from four different scorers while Sean Maguire made 31 stops.
Northeastern outshot the Terriers 32-27 for the game, while BU was 0-of-7 on the power play and NU 0-of-5.
Both teams got off to sluggish start in the opening minutes of the first period, with neither squad taking control of the contest. The Terriers, however, would pot a pair of goals 25 seconds apart midway through the frame to take a two-goal edge into the dressing room. NU's best chance of the frame came six minutes in when
Zach Aston-Reese hit
Kevin Roy with a pass in the slot for a hard wrister that caught Maguire in the chest.
The Terriers went up 1-0 with 9:01 to play in the stanza as Kevin Duane picked up his sixth goal of the season when his centering pass went off the skate of an NU defender and past Witt.
Less than 30 seconds later, Boston University made it a two-goal game when Danny O'Regan's snap shot from between the hashmarks went off the stick of a Husky, sneaking past Witt before he could close his pads. Witt could keep the deficit at two late in the period when he robbed O'Regan when his shot kicked off Witt's glove before he reached behind him and covered for the face-off.
Mike Szmatula had a chance to put the Huskies on the board early in the second period when
Mike McMurtry threaded a pass through the neutral zone up to Szmatula, who had gotten behind the defense. Szmatula then went in uncontested, and tried to tuck a shot under the right pad of Maguire, but the Terrier netminder made the save.
Boston University would go up by three with 12 minutes left in the frame as Robbie Baillargeon cleaned up a loose puck in front of the Husky cage, roofing a shot over the blocker of Witt off a feed from Evan Rodrigues.
BU tried to take a commanding four goal advantage when the Terriers went on the power play midway through the frame, but instead it was Northeastern who recorded the special teams tally to make it 3-1. With Boston University trying to move the puck up ice, Pimm picked off a pass in the neutral zone before speeding by the defense and burying a shot past Maguire for his 19th goal of the season. Maguire would stand tall for the remainder of the period, including a power play opportunity for the Huskies late in the stanza.
The Huskies continued to pressure the net into the third period, and almost made it a one-goal game after chaos ensued in front of the BU cage, with Maguire denying Pimm on a wraparound bid with bodies in the crease.
Witt would keep NU in the game in the final six minutes of regulation during a BU power play when Baillargeon ripped a shot from the left dot that Witt got a piece of with the shoulder before catching the crossbar.
Northeastern went on the power play with 2:54 to play in regulation, and pulled Witt in favor of the extra skater, but an empty netter from Ahti Oksanen from his own goal line sealed the win for the Terriers.
The Huskies and Terriers will meet again tomorrow night at Matthews Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, Northeastern will honor the 2013-14 senior class, while NU will also host Olympian night featuring 2014 Sochi Olympians Kendall Coyne and Steven Langton.
