Box Score
BOSTON –
Chris Carmain turned in another dominant performance on the mound and catcher
Josh Treff made a key defensive play in the seventh inning as the Northeastern baseball team topped Villanova, 5-2, Saturday afternoon.
Carmain improved to 3-2 on the season and allowed only one earned run on six hits and a walk through six innings. His seven strikeouts are one shy of his career-best mark. "He has been extraordinary as our 'stopper,'" Northeastern head coach Neil McPhee said of Carmain, noting that the senior pitcher has a knack for winning when the team needs it most.
Connor Lyons (1-for-5, R, 2B) led off the first inning with a double down the leftfield line, and the next batter,
Gabe Levanti (2-for-4, R, 2RBI), hit an RBI single to give NU a quick 1-0 lead. The Huskies added two more runs in the frame after Levanti scored on an error by the Villanova shortstop and
Shane Allen (1-for-4, R, RBI) collected an RBI on a ground out.
The Huskies (8-10) loaded the bases in the fourth inning after both Allen and
Mike Piscopo (2-for-3) singled and Treff (0-for-3) drew a walk. Levanti stepped in the box and was hit by a pitch on a 1-0 count to increase NU's lead to 4-0.
The Wildcats (7-13) scored both of their runs in the sixth inning after Todd Czinege led off with a walk, Luke Emling singled, and a throwing error by Levanti allowed Czinege to score. A ground out by Eric Lowe later in the stanza allowed Emling to score and cut NU's advantgage to 4-2.
Northeastern made up for one of those runs in the next inning. Levanti led off with a single but was thrown out at third base after a single by
Jason Vosler (1-for-5, R). Vosler advanced to second on the throw, and
Nick Fanneron (1-for-4, RBI, 2B) doubled to right field to give the Huskies a 5-2 edge.
Villanova loaded the bases in the seventh inning after Kevin Jewitt and Max Beermann hit consecutive singles and Emling was hit by a pitch with two outs. During the next at bat, Treff, whom McPhee called the team's "unsung hero," made a snap throw to first base to pick off Emling and end the Villanova threat.
Relief pitchers
Isaac Lippert and
Aaron Civale held Villanova to just one hit and a walk through the last three innings of the game as Civale picked up his first-career save.
The Huskies and Wildcats conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 23, at 1:15 p.m.
