WATCH: Three-on-three tournament this weekendBOSTON – Northeastern men's ice hockey goaltender
Clay Witt is an invitee to the Tampa Bay Lightning's Development Camp, which begins on Wednesday at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum in Witt's hometown of Brandon, Florida.
The camp will feature some of the Lightning's top prospects competing in on and off-ice workouts, skating drills and will culminate with the annual three-on-three tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday's portion of the tournament will be streamed live on
TampaBayLightning.com.
A Hobey Baker Award candidate in 2013-14, Witt rewrote the Northeastern record book in 2013-14, setting new single-season marks for goals against average (2.37) and save percentage (.932). His 17 victories, meanwhile, are fourth on the NU single-season record list, while his four shutouts are tied for third. Witt appeared in 32 games, posting a 17-12-3 record. During the Hockey East quarterfinals at New Hampshire, Witt become the eighth goaltender to make at least 1000 saves in a season. His 1043 stops this year were third on the NU record list.
"He's got a lot of untapped potential," Lightning scout Brian Putnam said in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times. "He's certainly a guy we would look to bring in at some point. Just happy to have him, see what he's got and try to prove that he's a NHL potential goalie. It's just a chance. Somebody's got to believe in him."
Witt was a finalist for the inaugural Mike Richter Award, given to the nation's most outstanding goaltender, was a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and won the Three Stars Award. In addition, he was a five-time Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and the 'Stop It' Goaltender of the Month in January.
"He was fabulous," said head coach
Jim Madigan. "We always had the confidence in his ability. It was just a matter of him getting an opportunity. He was a difference-maker for our team, gave us a chance to win every night. When it came to all our games, the bigger the opponent, the bigger he got."
Witt, who will be a redshirt senior for the Huskies in 2014-15, was named an assistant captain at the team's annual banquet in April. He led a Huskies club that went 19-14-4 during 2013-14, reaching the Beanpot championship game for the third straight season and returning to the Hockey East playoffs for the first time in three years.
