Box Score DEDHAM, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies continued their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over the University of New Hampshire at Dedham Field on Sunday.
Â
It was the team's third consecutive win, the first time they have accomplished that feat since they won three in a row during the 2012 season.
Â
The back-and-forth game was a hard-fought win for NU.
Â
The Wildcats opened the scoring with just less than seven minutes remaining in the first half. Meg Flatley inserted the ball to Jackie Hozza, who then put a shot on net that Lindsey Nerbonne was able to deflect past sophomore goalkeeper
Becky Garner.
Â
The Huskies defense responded well, however, and were able to close out the first half with some strong defensive stands leading to offensive fast breaks and scoring opportunities. Head coach
Cheryl Murtagh's squad controlled the pace of the game over the two halves, and the team looked poised for a breakout second 35 minutes.
Â
Senior
Kelly Dunn did just that when she registered her third goal of the season with just more than 21 minutes remaining in game. The goal – her third of the season marks a new career-high – came off a penalty corner, and was her second goal in two games.
Â
Dunn, a co-captain, inserted the ball to fellow forward
Emmy Zweserijn who ripped one on net. Then, with a scramble in front of the cage, Dunn was able to deflect the ball to the perfect spot to beat the UNH goalkeeper, Carlie Tarbell.
Â
Just minutes later
Vanessa Pryor scored her first goal of the season by redirecting a well-driven ball off the stick of
Emma Lamison.
Â
Lamison drove down the left side of the pitch, shielding the ball as she approached baseline. The forward made a quick cut towards the middle of the circle and fired one on goal, which Tarbell was able to turn away. The ball then trickled to Pryor who was able to put it in the back of the net.
Â
Lamison registered her third assist of the season, marking a new career-high.
Â
As the game wore on, the Huskies and Wildcats continued to battle for the win. With 5:11 left in the second half, UNH was able to break through on a corner to tie the game at two.
Â
The Huskies, however, responded admirably and regained control just minutes later.
Â
With 2:17 left in the game, NU took a 3-2 lead off a corner, the games final goal.
Â
As we have seen before, Lamison inserted the ball to teammate
Natalie Stewart. Stewart, the team leader in assists, set up co-captain
Kate Carlson for a powerful shot that flew past Tarbell. The goal is Carlson's third of the season which sets a new career-high.
Â
Precision passing helped the Huskies establish a good offensive presence early in the second half. The left side of the field, from
Zoe Kale to
Caroline Judge to
Marisa Dunn, was a point of strength as the team drove the ball effectively to the corner, generating offensive chances.
Â
Northeastern is back in action next on Friday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. when they travel to Monmouth for a non-conference showdown. Two days later, NU returns to Massachusetts for a matchup with interstate rival UMass at 2 p.m.
