Season Stats WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Northeastern Huskies defeated the Monmouth Hawks 2-0 on Friday afternoon to open their stretch of four games on the road.
The victory extends NU's winning streak to four games, the longest streak since the Huskies won six consecutive games to open the 2012 season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Becky Garner continued the strong start to her second year in net by making five saves against the Hawks and registering her second shutout of the season. She now has five shutouts over her career.
Offensively, the Huskies started off strong against the Hawks.
Natalie Stewart – who heading into the game was ranked eighth nationally in assists per game with a 1.00 average – opened the scoring when she beat Amanda Westerweller with a slick shot a mere nine minutes in.
Stewart dribbled the ball into the circle and was able to place it underneath the pads of Westerweller. The goal, officially scored at the 8:49 mark, is the fastest the Huskies have scored a goal through their six games this season.
The second half opened with
Cheryl Murtagh's squad displaying their offensive prowess, generating scoring chances quickly and putting the Hawks on their heels.
As of late, the combination of sophomore
Emma Lamison to co-captain
Kate Carlson has been very successful for NU and the tandem was able to put together an excellent scoring chance early in the second half that Westweller just barley turned away.
The constant pressure from the Huskies would pay off early in the second half when forward
Vanessa Pryor broke through to give the Huskies a two-goal lead at the 52:49 mark. She took a pass from Lamison and was able to bury it for her second goal of the season. Pryor now has two goals over the Huskies last two games.
Emma Lamison has also registered an assist in two straight games for NU.
Throughout the whole game, strong stands in the defensive third by the Huskies led to fast-break scoring chances on the offensive end. In light of the strong defensive play, it was a very successful day for the Huskies as the stats will show: the eight corners they were awarded mark a team season-high; the 15 shots they registered also mark a team season-high.
Over the 2014 season the second half has been a strong point for the Huskies and that trend continued in today's win. Over their last four games they have scored 10 goals in the second half, generated 31 shots and only allowed three goals.
The back-and-forth first half came to a close with the Huskies outshooting the Hawks 5-4. The 1-0 advantage marked the first time this season NU entered halftime leading the game.
Northeastern is back on action for the second game of this four-game road trip when the team travels Amherst to face interstate rival Massachusetts at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Following that game, they will take on crosstown rival Harvard on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
