ZURICH – Former Northeastern women's hockey standout Florence Schelling '12 was named the Swiss Ice Hockey Woman of the Year at the Swiss Hockey Awards on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Â
Schelling backstopped Switzerland to the bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics by stopping 255 of 279 shots (.914 save percentage), including a 64-save performance against Canada in the tournament opener. The Oberengstringen, Switzerland, native turned aside 31 shots in the third-place game as the Swiss upset Sweden to claim the nation's first-ever medal in Olympic women's ice hockey. As a result, Schelling was named the tournament's Best Goaltender by the media, and earned IIHF MVP honors as well.
Â
Schelling's success in Sochi was bolstered by the play of another Northeastern women's hockey alumna, Julia Marty '11, who captained the Swiss in the Olympic tournament.
Â
Schelling suited up for the Huskies between 2008-12 and posted a career 1.74 GAA, good for the best mark in program history. Schelling also graduated as the program leader in career save percentage (.940), goalie minutes played (5,878), and total saves (2,681).
