Season StatsDEDHAM, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies put together their best performance of the 2014 season in a 7-1 win over the UC Davis Aggies on Sunday at Dedham Field.
The victory pushes their winning streak to eight games, the longest streak since the 2011 season, when they also won eight straight. The win over the Aggies also marks their fourth straight at home this season, and the first time they have won every game in the month of September since the 2005 season.
Northeastern allowed the game's opening goal a mere three minutes in, but following the Aggies' goal, the Huskies dominated in every aspect of the game.
All in all, four Huskies were able to score goals in the win including two goals from captains
Caroline Judge and
Kelly Dunn, and two goals from up-and-coming forward
Emma Lamison. Sophomore
Emmy Zweserijn also scored the red and black, her fourth goal of the season.
Head coach
Cheryl Murtagh's squad registered 21 shots to 7 shots from the Aggies; the Huskies were awarded 10 more corners than their opponent; and NU spent a majority of the game in the offensive end, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Caroline judge scored Northeastern's first goal off a corner at the 5:16 mark. Fellow captain
Kelly Dunn inserted the ball perfectly to
Natalie Stewart. The sophomore midfielder then found
Kate Carlson to her left and Carlson redirected the ball to Judge across the circle who then ripped one on net to tie the game at one.
Just minutes later, Dunn scored off a terrific pass, once again, from Carlson.
Emma Lamison inserted the corner, but the ball trickled just past the sticks off a few girls in red and black. Fortunately, it bounced to Carlson on the left side of the goal, who then drove the baseline and found a cutting Dunn for the Huskies' second goal.
It was a well-executed goal as the Huskies clearly caught the Aggies off-guard. The goal was Dunn's fourth of the season, a new career-high. She would top that in the second half when she scored her fifth of the season.
The success Northeastern has had off corners this season has been outstanding. Several combinations have proved to be lethal and multiple Huskies have put on display their powerful shots.
The success off corners continued when Lamison was able to score her fourth of the season. Lamison inserted the ball to
Natalie Stewart to start the corner, who then set up Carlson. The captain, however, passed on the shot and drove to the corner while feeding the ball to a cutting Lamison for the easy tap-in. It was a play similar to the one that led to Judge's first goal.
Emmy Zweserijn scored her fourth goal of the season diving and redirecting a
Vanessa Pryor pass just beyond the outreached hands of the UC Davis Goalkeeper, Makeila Macdonald. It was an excellent show of athleticism from the Ziest, Netherlands native.
The Huskies would go on to score three more goals, one each from Dunn, Judge and Lamison, in what was an excellent second half. Again, the Huskies have played extremely well in the second half of games during this eight-game winning streak.
Along with the offensive onslaught, the red and black played exceptionally well on the defensive end to help
Becky Garner earn the victory.
Again,
Kaci Coveleski displayed outstanding vision and awareness from the backend, guiding the Huskies against the formidable offense of the Aggies.
Along with Coveleski,
Zoe Kale and
Jessica Unger also had tremendous games and kept the UC Davis offense out of sync, leading to just five shots on goal.
Alyssa Carlson also showcased some defensive skills throughout the game.
Sunday's game was the fifth in nine days for the Huskies. They will now get some well-earned rest before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 3 against the Pride of Hofstra in Hempstead, New York. It will be the Huskies first conference game of the season. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Two days later, the Huskies return to Dedham Field to host rival Boston College. That game is also set for 3 p.m.
Game Notes• The Huskies are now 1-0 all-time against the Aggies.
• This is the first win the Huskies have had against a West Coast team since defeating Stanford in 2011
• Emma Lamison has now scored two goals in one game twice this season
• Caroline Judge broke through for her first goals of the season in the win.
