Box Score DEDHAM, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies defeated the Providence Friars, 5-3, to secure their first win of the 2014 season. Four Huskies scored in the win, and
Becky Garner made a few clutch saves down the stretch for the victory.
Natalie Stewart had a career day for the Huskies. The sophomore midfielder finished with six points on the afternoon after scoring one goal and assisting on four others. In 2013, Stewart had four assists over the 18-game slate. Her strong play was evident throughout the match as she set the tone for NU.
Kate Carlson also had a solid day for the red and black. The redshirt junior was able to score twice off corners and match her single-season high for goals. She scored two goals back in 2012.
The Huskies controlled large portions of the match over the 70 minutes. Defensive prowess displayed by
Cheryl Murtagh's squad led to several fast-break opportunities on the offensive end. NU outshot Providence 13-11 and generated seven corners to five from the Friars.
The Huskies opened the game's scoring at the 12:57 mark of the first half. Captain
Kelly Dunn scored her first goal of the season after Carlson fed her breaking towards the middle of the net. The senior placed the ball perfectly and beat the Friars goalkeeper, Deidra Clymer.
Providence responded two minutes later when Daniella Bernasconi scored an unassisted goal. The scramble in front of the Huskies' net made it difficult for Garner and the defense to locate the ball and Bernasconi was able to put it past her.
After a back-and-forth first 35 minutes, the half ended with the teams tied at one.
The Huskies, however, were about to break out and showcase how talented their offense is. NU opened the second half with three goals: one from Stewart, another from
Emmy Zweserijn, and Carlson scored her first.
A defensive stop led to a fast break for the Huskies. Marissa Dunn carried the ball into the offensive zone and fed a cutting Stewart who was able to put it in the back right corner of the net and get her first goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Zweserjin ripped a shot from the circle and beat Clymer for the game's third goal.
Then, at the 55:56 mark, Carlson took a feed from Stewart and drilled into the back of the net. Carlson's goal came off a Huskies' corner, set up by
Emma Lamison.
10 minutes later Carlson would strike again off a corner. The back displayed how powerful her shot is when she took another pass from Stewart and ripped it to the bottom left of the goal.
It was a solid afternoon for the Huskies as they get their first win of the season under their belt. The team is back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 when they welcome Dartmouth to Dedham Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
