HighlightsCHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 16 Boston College (12-7-2, 5-4-2) received 31 saves from Thatcher Demko and two goals from Chris Calnan to skate past the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (7-11-3, 3-7-2) on Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum.
Torin Snydeman and
Ryan Rosenthal scored for the Huskies, while
Clay Witt made 21 saves in goal. The Huskies outshot BC 33-25, including a 17-9 edge in the second period, and was 0-of-6 on the power play. The Eagles were 1-of-4 on the man advantage and netted a shorthanded goal midway through the second period.
NU held a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal in the first period, and took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening stanza, but a pair of Eagle goals in the final two minutes of the frame gave Boston College the 2-1 edge through 20 minutes of play.
Snydeman put Northeastern up 1-0 with 11:20 to go in the period on his fourth goal of the season. With the Huskies cycling the puck below the BC net,
Mike Szmatula found Snydeman on the doorstep, and Snydeman was able to sneak the puck inside the right post and past Demko for an early Husky lead. Minutes later,
Nolan Stevens had a chance to put NU up by two when he rocketed a slap shot from the slot, but Demko came up with the big glove save to rob the Northeastern rookie.
Michael Matheson would bring the Eagles even with 1:53 left in the period when he took a pass from Teddy Doherty and fired a wrist shot from the left dot that got over Witt's shoulder for Matheson's second of the season.
BC took its first lead of the weekend just 52 seconds later when Chris Calnan took advantage of chaos in front of the Northeastern goal, pounding home a loose puck in the crease for his ninth of the year.
Despite the Huskies outshooting the Eagles 17-9 in the second period, it was Boston College that potted the lone goal in the period to take a 3-1 advantage into the dressing room. Calnan put BC up by two with 11:17 left in the frame when he sent a puck in on goal from below the goal line that ricocheted off the right pad of Witt and into the net with the Eagles shorthanded.
NU had two five-on-three power play opportunities during the second period, and nearly conceded another shorthanded goal when Matheson broke in alone on Witt, but the NU netminder came up big to keep the deficit at two. Later in the frame, Witt would also deny Doherty and Brendan Silk on back-to-back chances.
After trading penalties for the first 13 minutes of the third period, both teams scored in a span of 1:14, the first coming from Rosenthal. With NU controlling the puck in the Eagle end,
John Stevens fed
Trevor Owens with a pass at the point. Owens then sent a low shot in on goal that Demko stopped, but Rosenthal was there to hammer home the rebound to make it 3-2.
Boston College struck back, however, with a power play goal from Adam Gilmour to regain the BC two-goal lead as Zach Sanford hit Gilmour with a pass at the left dot, and Gilmour one-timed it past Witt for his sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend.
Northeastern would pull Witt in favor of the extra skater with 50 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Eagles were able to stave off a final NU effort.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday night when Northeastern travels to Burlington, Vermont for a pair of games with No. 12/11 Vermont. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
