HighlightsBURLINGTON, Vt. – Derick Roy made 30 saves and the Northeastern men's ice hockey erased a pair of one-goal deficits to pick up a hard fought 2-2 draw at No. 10/9 Vermont on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse in non-conference action.
Mike McMurtry and
Kevin Roy scored for the Huskies, who went 1-of-4 on the power play against the nation's top penalty killing unit. UVM received goals from Brady Shaw and Colin Markison, along with 23 stops from Brody Hoffman. Vermont was 2-of-5 on the man advantage and outshot NU 32-25.
Vermont came out hard at the Huskies in the opening minutes of the first period, setting the tone physically and looking to pot the game's first goal. The Catamounts did just that, and buried a five-on-three power play goal less than five minutes in. With UVM moving the puck around the Northeastern zone, Mike Paliotta fired a shot from the point that Roy stopped with his pad. The rebound, however, was left on the doorstep, and Brady Shaw was there to knock it home for his eight goal of the year.
NU found its skating legs after the UVM tally, led by the play of sophomore
Dalen Hedges who created several scoring opportunities in the first period. Northeastern struck back to level the score at one with 5:13 to play in the frame when McMurtry scored his second of the season with the Huskies on the man advantage. After receiving a pass from Hedges at the blue line,
Matt Benning patiently averted a defender before sending a wrist through traffic that McMurtry redirected past Hoffman to make it 1-1.
The game opened up late in the period with both teams in search of the go-ahead goal. Northeastern nearly made it 2-1 with less than two minutes to play when
Mike Szmatula,
Zach Aston-Reese and
Torin Snydeman went in three-on-one, but Snydeman's shot went just wide. Then Roy was forced to come up with a huge stop with 12 seconds to play on a bouncing puck, but the NU netminder stretched out to make the pad save.
Both teams had their chances during an evenly played second period, with each squad netting a goal to send the teams into the dressing room tied at two. Vermont capitalized with its second power play goal of the night 4:15 into the frame when Colin Markison redirected a Paliotta shot from the point just nine seconds into the man advantage.
The Huskies were awarded a five-minute power play with 10:02 to play in the period, and had their opportunities to tie the score, but Hoffman was there to deny them including a big glove save on Szmatula in the slot. NU continued to press the Catamounts in the late stages of the period, and
Brendan Collier almost got into the action when he stole a UVM clearing pass and whistled a shot in on goal, but Hoffman got a blocker on it.
Roy brought the Huskies even with 2:50 left in the period when he put his talents on display by roofing a backhand over the shoulder of a sprawling Hoffman off a crisp entry feed from Hedges.
Vermont controlled the tempo of the third period, outshooting NU 10-3 and testing Roy throughout the final 20 minutes of regulation. UVM thought it had taken a 3-2 lead with 11:02 left in regulation when a scrum broke out in front of the NU cage, and the officials lost sight of the puck before it had crossed the line. The play was reviewed and stood as called, eventually sending the game to overtime.
NU had the better of the opportunities in the extra session, and Hedges nearly ended it in the first minute when he rang a wrist shot off the right pipe. Later in OT,
John Stevens dropped a pass to
Nolan Stevens for a one-timer that Hoffman knocked down.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday night when Northeastern hosts Notre Dame in the first of two games at Matthews Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
