InfographicBOSTON – Paris Bass scored nine of his 19 points in overtime as the Detroit Titans outscored the Northeastern men's basketball team, 21-9, in the extra session to claim an 81-69 victory in non-conference action Monday at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies (13-6) led, 60-56, with just over a minute to play in regulation, before the Titans (10-10) rallied to force overtime on a game-tying dunk by Bass with 28 seconds remaining. Northeastern had a good look at the basket in the closing seconds, but junior
Zach Stahl's finger-roll rimmed out as the horn sounded.
Bass then took over the overtime period, scoring Detroit's first eight points on four layups to give the Titans a 68-62 advantage. The visitors then extended the run to 11-2 to make it 71-62 after free throws from Bass and Chris Jenkins with just over a minute remaining in OT.
Junior
David Walker pulled the Huskies back within five with a triple from the left wing, but NU would get no closer as the Titans held on to snap the Huskies' four-game winning streak.
Walker led the Huskies in scoring for the third straight game, recording a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds. Senior
Scott Eatherton scored all 14 of his points in the second half, while sophomore
T.J. Williams chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Jenkins notched a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Titans, while Juwan Howard Jr. (16 points) and Andrew Wilson (11 points) also reached double-figures in scoring.
The Huskies got to the line early and often, but connected on just 63.6 percent of their free throws (21-for-33), while the Titans posted a 16-for-18 mark (88.9 percent) at the charity stripe.Â
Detroit also won the rebounding battle, 44-40, and outscored NU by a 42-28 margin in the paint.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 12-7 lead courtesy of a pair of three's from Walker and a stingy defensive effort that forced six Detroit turnovers in the first eight minutes.
A block by redshirt junior
Quincy Ford led to a breakaway layup by freshman
Devon Begley at the midway point of the half as NU claimed its largest lead of the game at 16-9.
The Titans closed the half on a 17-10 run–capped by a jumper form Howard Jr.–to head into the intermission tied at 26-apiece.
Redshirt junior
Caleb Donnelly ignited Northeastern with a pair of big 3-pointers early in the second stanza as the Huskies jumped out to a 37-34 lead with 14:30 to play.Â
The lead grew to six down the stretch as an Eatherton dunk and free throw gave the hosts a 58-52 cushion with 2:40 left.
Down but not out, the Titans scored eight of the final 10 points of regulation to force overtime, before shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 9-of-11 from the foul line in the extra session.
