BOSTON – Two goals from Dalen Hedges, including the game-winner with 90 seconds left in regulation, along with a three-point night from Kevin Roy spearheaded the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (9-11-4, 5-7-2) to a 3-2 victory against the Fighting Irish on Friday night at Matthews Arena.

Notre Dame climbed out of a two-goal deficit in the third period with tallies from Mario Lucia and Sam Herr, but Hedges' buried the game-winner with a one-timer off a feed from Mike McMurtry (two assists) to regain the Husky edge. Derick Roy finished with 23 saves while Cal Petersen had 37 stops for UND.

NU outshot Notre Dame 40-25 in the game, including a 32-12 edge through 40 minutes, while the Huskies went 1-of-4 on the man advantage and held UND to a 1-of-6 showing on the power play.

Northeastern came out strong in the first period, outshooting UND 16-5 and generating a majority of the scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of play. Early in the frame, McMurtry and Hedges nearly connected for the game's first goal as McMurtry hit Hedges with a pass between the hashmarks, but Andy Ryan was able to back check and get a stick in the shooting lane.

With NU on the power play midway through the period, Northeastern almost went up 1-0 when the Huskies showed some poise in the offensive zone before finding McMurtry on the doorstep for a bid that Petersen got a pad on.

At the other end, Roy was there to steer aside all five shots he saw in the first period, the toughest coming off the stick of Vince Hinostroza on a toe-drag through the slot before firing a shot off the mask of Roy.

NU continued to dictate the pace of the game in the second period, tossing another 16 shots on Petersen and scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead into the dressing room. Roy put the Huskies up 1-0 less than three minutes into the period when he received a pass from Dustin Darou in the slot, and ripped a shot that went off the right shoulder of Petersen and across the goal line for Roy's 11th of the season.

Derick Roy continued to hold up his end of the bargain in the second frame, turning away seven shots, including his biggest stop of the night on a post-to-post robbery of Mario Lucia 10 minutes into the stanza.

With Northeastern on the power play with 6:02 left in the period, the Huskies cashed in just 13 seconds into the man advantage on a goal from Hedges, who cleaned up the mess in the crease after a pair of chances on Petersen.

Notre Dame cut the deficit in half early in the third period, converting on the power play 3:11 into the frame. After Notre Dame elected not to take a penalty shot when an NU defenseman covered the puck in the crease, the Fighting Irish instead opted for the power play opportunity, and Lucia buried a one-timer from the right dot to make it 2-1.

Mike Szmatula tried to regain the two-goal NU edge midway through the third when he sprinted into the attacking zone before ripping a shot on goal that Petersen snared with his glove.

Notre Dame would level the score at two with 6:45 remaining in regulation when Sam Herr took a feed from Jake Evans entering the offensive zone before whipping a shot through traffic that beat Roy under the glove.

It wasn't until the final 90 seconds of regulation that NU went ahead for good as Roy skated the puck through the neutral zone before dishing to McMurtry. McMurtry then quickly settled the puck before finding Hedges for a one-timer that went off the pad of Petersen and into the net for the eventual game-winner.

The Huskies and Fighting Irish will meet again tomorrow evening in the series finale at Matthews Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
