InfographicSOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Northeastern men's ice hockey team (1-8-2, 0-4-2) fought back to erase a two-goal deficit to net the tying goal with 4:07 left in regulation to pick up a point in the league standings against No. 18 Notre Dame (5-2-3, 3-0-1) on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena, 2-2.
Matt Benning buried the equalizer late in the third period with a power play goal from the point, while
Garret Cockerill also scored for the Huskies.
Ryan Ruck made 23 stops in goal as NU outshot the Fighting Irish, 34-25. Jake Evans and Connor Hurley each scored for UND, and got 32 saves from Cal Petersen.
Northeastern went 1-of-4 on the man advantage while Notre Dame was 1-of-5 and won 29-of-54 face-offs.
Goal descriptions:• With Notre Dame on a five-minute power play following a contact to the head penalty on the Huskies, the Fighting Irish went up 1-0 on a goal from Jake Evans. With UND slinging the puck around the Northeastern defensive zone, Thomas DiPauli fired the puck across the zone to Evans, who then sent a low shot past Ruck before the rookie netminder could slide across the crease.
• The Fighting Irish took a two-goal lead two minutes into the second period on Connor Hurley's first of the season. After Justin Wade's initial shot from the right side caught the body of a defender in front of the cage, Hurley got a stick on the rebound that went off the post, off Ruck and over the goal line for a 2-0 Notre Dame lead.
• Northeastern cut the deficit to 2-1 with 6:27 left in the second period when
Garret Cockerill netted his second of the year following extended zone time for Northeastern. Following a
Kevin Roy shot from the left side,
Sam Kurker gathered the rebound and fed Cockerill for a one-timer that found its way through traffic and past Petersen.
• The game would stay that way until there was 4:07 to play in regulation when the Huskies leveled the score at two on a power play goal from Benning. With Ripley in the box for a trip,
Dylan Sikura tossed the puck across the zone to
Zach Aston-Reese along the half wall. Aston-Reese then fed Benning with a pass at the point, and Benning ripped a one-timer past Petersen for his second goal of the year.

• Roy's second period assist moved him into a tie for 23rd on Northeastern's career assist list with 74.
The road ahead:• Northeastern will return to action next weekend for a home-and-home set against the defending NCAA champions and current No. 1 team in the nation Providence, beginning on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
