InfographicDETROIT – In a game of runs, it was Detroit that came out on top as the Northeastern men's basketball team fell 76-73 to the Titans Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
Â
David Walker led the team with 29 points on the night behind 9-of-13 shooting, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, a career-high for the senior.
Â
Walker's seven threes tie the third-most in school history with five other Huskies and were just one shy of tying the school record (8). His 29 points are one off his career-high set against Miami (OH) earlier this season and marks his fifth 20-point game of the year.
Â
Zach Stahl finished the game with 17 points and six rebounds while
Quincy Ford added 14 points and three steals on the night.
Â
The Huskies erased 10 and nine-point deficits in the first and second half respectively, but were unable to close out the win falling to 6-2 on the year.
Â
Detroit (3-3) had five scorers register double-digits on the day led by 20 points from Josh McFolley.
Â
Northeastern fell behind early when two-straight three-point shots helped the Titans to a quick 8-0 lead to start the game, a lead that Detroit would hang on to, and extend to 10 at the 9:10 mark in the first half, spurring the first Husky run of the game.
Â
Ford started things off with a dunk, slamming down two points, and Northeastern's first basket in over two minutes. Walker added to the run hitting his third three of the half.
Caleb Donnelly followed suit and notched a three of his own to cut the lead to just two.
Â
After allowing a Detroit bucket, Walker hit yet another three to make it a one-point game while Donnelly followed giving Northeastern a two-point lead, the Huskies first of the game at the 5:47 mark capping off a 14-2 run.
Â
Detroit fought their way back in extending its lead to eight with less than two minutes remaining in the first stanza before the Huskies cut it to five, once again on a Walker three-pointer, heading into the intermission.
Â
Northeastern started the second half with five straight turnovers while Detroit began with a couple of buckets to extend its lead to nine.
Â
On the fifth turnover, Ford stole it back and drained a three to cut into the lead. Detroit gained the nine-point lead back forcing head coach
Bill Coen to call a timeout, but coming off of the break
David Walker began a Northeastern 9-0 run with a couple free throws.
Â
A Stahl layup, and yet another three by Walker and two more free throws by
Jeremy Miller tied things up with 12:43 remaining in the game.
Â
But as soon as the Huskies tied things up, Detroit regained a nine-point lead, yet another nine-point advantage that Northeastern was able to erase. Two straight layups and a free throw by Ford gave Northeastern its first lead of the second half.
Â
The two teams traded buckets and exchanged leads but the Huskies could not land the game-winner and Detroit's free throw shooting down the stretch gave them the ultimate win.
Â
The Huskies will return to action on Monday night when they close out their Michigan trip with a game at Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on ESPN 3.
