Press ConferenceHARTFORD, Conn. – Adam Reid and
Torin Snydeman had two goals apiece, and
Derick Roy had 30 saves to lead the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (14-11-4, 9-7-2) to a 6-1 victory at Connecticut (9-15-7, 6-9-4) on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.
Â
Trevor Owens also scored for Northeastern, which was 0-of-4 on the man advantage. Shots were level at 31, as Connecticut received 25 saves from Rob Nichols.
Â
The teams played a back and forth first period with each squad generating scoring opportunities, but it was Northeastern that potted the lone goal of the frame to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room. NU was buzzing around the UConn zone in the early stages of the contest as Nichols was forced to make a point blank stop on
Torin Snydeman before
Zach Aston-Reese fired a shot off the right post minutes later.
Â
With the line of
Kevin Roy,
Dalen Hedges and
Mike McMurtry cycling the puck below the goal line, the Huskies bolted out to a 1-0 lead when Hedges spotted Owens cheating in from the point. Hedges hit the freshman defenseman with a pass, and Owens ripped a shot over the blocker of Nichols for his third goal of the season with 10:55 to play in the period.
Â
NU kept the pressure on in the second period, adding three goals to take a 4-1 advantage through 40 minutes of play. Snydeman gave the Huskies a two-goal edge less than three minutes into the frame when he buried a rebound off a shot from Aston-Reese past Nichols for Snydeman's sixth of the season.
Â
UConn cut the deficit in half about three minutes later when Shaun Pauly made it a one-goal game, taking a pass in the skates from Corey Ronan, quickly transitioning it to his skates and firing a shot over the glove of Roy for Pauly's fourth of the year.
Â
Northeastern took control of the game right back, however, with two goals in the final five minutes of the period, along with two strong penalty kills. Hedges regained the two-goal cushion for the Huskies with 4:39 to play in the frame following a nice cycle from his linemates. McMurtry took a pass from Roy below the goal line, and used body position to send a soft backhand pass out in front to Hedges, who roofed a shot over Nichols.
Â
Adam Reid put Northeastern up by three with 2:27 to go in the period when he finished off a strong play from NU in transition. After Roy dropped a pass to
Brendan Collier at the right faceoff dot, Collier drew a defender towards him before firing a pass across the grain to Reid at the far post for a one-timer past Nichols.
Â
Reid potted his second of the afternoon three minutes into the third period off another transition play from the Huskies. With Collier and Roy playing catch with the puck down the ice, Reid joined the play and took a pass atop the slot before blasting a snap shot off the post and in.
Â
Snydeman added to the lead late in regulation when he potted his second of the afternoon, hammering home a shot off a feed from
John Stevens.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action next weekend when Northeastern travels to Maine for a two-game set with the Black Bears, beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m. from Alfond Arena.
