RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt junior
Caleb Donnelly of the Northeastern men's basketball team was named a co-winner of the CAA's prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, as announced by the conference Saturday.
The Ehlers Award is presented annually to a men's and women's basketball student-athlete who "embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with their academic athletic achievement." The award is named after former James Madison athletic director Dean Ehlers, who was a founding member of the conference and served as its first president.
Donnelly, who shared the honor with William & Mary's Tom Schalk, owns a 3.99 GPA in the Chemical Engineering Masters and Bachelors Program. Donnelly has been on the Dean's List every semester at Northeastern and has been involved with the Omega Chi Epsilon Mentoring Program. He has previously volunteered as a teacher through the Citizen Schools Program and taught an inner-city, sixth-grade class how to build solar-powered toy cars. In addition, Donnelly has been named the 2016 class representative for the American Institute for Chemical Engineers, and was previously named a Huntington 100 award winner as one of the 100 most influential students at Northeastern.
On the court, Donnelly leads Northeastern with a 51.3 percent 3-point shooting clip, making 20 of his 39 attempts from beyond the arc. After playing two years on the club team, Donnelly walked on to the squad prior to last season and has embraced the role of a quiet leader on the court and in the locker room.
Donnelly is the second Husky to win the Dean Ehlers Award in the last three years; Jonathan Lee also earned the honor following the 2012-13 campaign.
Donnelly and the Huskies will close out the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday night at Charleston. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on NESN.com.Â
