AMHERST, Mass. – Goals from five different scorers, including three unanswered in the third period, sent the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (12-11-4, 7-7-2) to a come-from-behind victory at Massachusetts (8-18-1, 3-13-1) on Friday night at the Mullins Center, 5-3.

The Huskies erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 during the game before going ahead midway through the third period, and outshot the Minutemen 31-14 during the final 40 minutes of regulation. Colton Saucerman, John Stevens, Zach Aston-Reese, Trevor Owens and Kevin Roy all scored for Northeastern, while Clay Witt made 19 stops in goal.

While the Huskies dominated parts of the opening 20 minutes of play, it was the Minutemen who netted the period's lone goal to take a 1-0 leading into the dressing room. Dalen Hedges nearly put NU up early when he stickhandled through the slot before ripping a shot that caught the left post. Northeastern also established itself physically early in the frame, including a big open ice hit by Adam Reid on Troy Power in the UMass zone.

Massachusetts took a 1-0 lead with 8:50 to play in the period when Steven Guzzo fired a shot from just inside the blue line that Witt knocked down but couldn't cover, allowing Riley McDougall to crash the cage and bury the rebound for his fourth goal of the year.

A pair of UMass goals bookended two Northeastern tallies in the second period, allowing the Minutemen to carry its one-goal lead through 40 minutes. With Massachusetts on a five-on-three power play to begin the frame, Dennis Kravchenko extended the Minuteman lead to two just 18 seconds into the period when he fired a shot through traffic that beat Witt for Kravchenko's ninth goal of the year. Minutes later, Witt kept the deficit at two when he flashed the right pad to stone Shane Walsh on a shot from the slot.

Northeastern made it a one-goal game with 6:21 to go in the period when Saucerman whipped a shot from the left side that beat Mastalerz over the left shoulder for Saucerman's sixth of the year.

Less than a minute later, the Huskies struck again as the Stevens brothers connected to tie the game at two. After a hit from Ryan Rosenthal in the defensive zone created transition for NU, resulting in a pass from Nolan Stevens to John Stevens on a two-on-one, beating Mastalerz top shelf for Stevens' third of the year, and second in as many games.

Massachusetts fired back with its third tally of the night with less than a minute to play as Patrick Lee took a feed from Ray Pigozzi in the slot, sending a shot over Witt's shoulder to make it 3-2 Minutemen.

The Huskies fought back again in the third period, scoring three times and outshooting UMass 13-6. The first goal came six minutes into the period when Aston-Reese cleaned up a mess in front of the goal, pounding a loose puck through Mastalerz for his sixth of the season.

Less than three minutes later, the Huskies took their first lead of the night when Roy's shot from the slot was steered aside, but Owens followed the play and knocked home the rebound for his second of the season before Mastalerz could recover.

Northeastern had a goal disallowed late in the third period, and was forced to kill off a late penalty, but Roy iced the game for NU with his 12th goal of the year late in regulation on a snap shot that beat Mastalerz short side.

The Huskies will be back in action on Monday night when Northeastern battles No. 3/2 Boston University in the Beanpot championship game. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. and the game will be aired live on NESN and TSN2.
