FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Paul Duffey represented the Northeastern track and field program extremely well with a strong 14th-place overall finish in the 800-meter run at the NCAA indoor championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday, March 13.

Duffey completed his 800 meters in 1:50.83, his second best time of the season. The sophomore started the race in a strong position, battling among the top three runners during the first 400-meters.

"There are many takeaways for us to focus on as we move into the outdoor season and prepare for the outdoor championships," Director of Track and Field Cathrine Erickson said. "Given that this is Paul's first time at the NCAA Championships, we are very proud of him."

As the heat continued, Edward Kemboi of Iowa State, Dylan Capwell of Monmouth and Alex Amankwah of Alabama separated themselves en route to earning first-, second- and third-place finishes.

The top three finishers in both heats as well as the next two fastest times qualify for tomorrow's 800-meter final.

The top six finishers were Kemboi, Capwell, Clayton Murphy of Akron, Amankwah, as well as Brandon McBride of Mississippi State, and Tre'tez Kinnaird of Indiana. The two next fastest times belonged to Florida's Ryan Schnulle and Georgetown's Ryan Manahan.

The middle distance runner's time is the seventh fastest in program history.

As the first Husky to compete in the indoor championships since the 2012-13 season, Duffey closed out his race in an all out sprint to secure his time. The Hanson, Massachusetts, native holds the program record in the 800-meters with a time of 1:48.02, which he ran at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Duffey and the Huskies now prepare for the Carolina Classic in Carolina, Puerto Rico, as they kick off the outdoor season next weekend on Friday, March 20 through Saturday, March 21.
