BOSTON - Fresh off a three-game sweep of its CAA rival, Delaware, the Northeastern baseball team begins a new week with a pair of games against two New England programs. The Huskies will first close out a six-game home stand at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts, with a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 31, against Rhode Island before traveling south on Wednesday, April 1, to Smithfield, Rhode Island, for a 3 p.m. game against Bryant.

All-time against Rhode Island

Longtime New England baseball foes, Northeastern and Rhode Island have squared off more than 100 times since the Huskies' first season in 1921. Since 2011, the Rams have edged out the Huskies in six of their last seven head-to-head games, allowing URI to tip the scale in the all-time series back in its direction with a 61-51-1 lead. NU won six consecutive games against Rhode Island between 1987 and 1989, the longest winning streak the Huskies have ever enjoyed opposite the Rams.

All-time against Bryant

NU will meet Bryant for the 10th time in program history on Wednesday with the Bulldogs sporting a 6-3 lead in the all-time series. Although the Huskies have dropped four straight games to Bryant in recent years, the Huskies did win a three-game series played at both schools' home fields in 2010, including a 10-0 shutout victory at Freidman Diamond and a 7-4 win on the road during game two.

Scouting the Rams

Rhode Island has navigated a challenging non-conference schedule during the first half of the 2015 season, starting the year off with two consecutive three-game sets against No. 5 Florida and No. 14 North Carolina. In the latter series, the Rams played three games within three runs against the Tar Heels, topping UNC, 6-3, in the weekend finale on Feb. 28. Since then, URI has gone 4-5-1 overall, but the Rams are still in search of their first series victory of the year. Redshirt-sophomore Ben Wessel enters Tuesday's game with a 1.17 ERA in three relief appearances and one start, while Jordan Powell leads Rhode Island with a .321 batting average. The Rams have been quick around the base paths this season too as their 39 team stolen bases rank second most in the Atlantic 10.

Scouting the Bulldogs

Bryant enters the week with a three-game winning streak after knocking off fellow New England opponents UMass Lowell (7-6) and Hartford (3-0, 3-2) during the past week. The Bulldogs won two out of three games against CAA member Towson between March 8 and March 9 to bounce back from a 0-6 start to the year, but were swept soon after on the road at Coastal Carolina. Sophomore outfielder Matt Albanese has the second highest batting average (.354) in the NEC, given at least 16 games, and leads the team with 19 RBIs and five home runs. Cole Fabio is hitting .302 on the season with seven RBIs and 10 walks, while Jordan Mountford has delivered nine extra-base hits this year.

Last time out against Rhode Island

Then-junior Isaac Lippert threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just two hits on April 1, 2014, as the Huskies shutout the Rams, 6-0, in Kingston, Rhode Island. Lippert struck out six and walked just one hitter before then-freshman Aaron Civale retired six straight URI batters out of the bullpen in the eighth and ninth innings. Then-freshman Jimmy Hand blasted a triple to right-center field in the fourth inning that scored Mike Piscopo and Pat Madigan to give NU a commanding, 4-0 lead.

Last time out against Bryant

Second baseman Michael Foster went one-for-three from the plate while teammate Gabe Levanti earned a base-hit as well despite Northeastern coming up short against Bryant, 3-0, on March 19, 2014. Bryant outhit the Huskies, 7-6, and sent two home runs over the outfield wall in the fifth inning at Friedman Diamond, solidifying the victory for the Bulldogs. James Mulry allowed six hits in 6.0 innings on the mound for NU while Aaron Civale allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings of relief.

Huskies sweep Delaware with two walk-off wins

Late-game heroics by Maxwell Burt and Cam Hanley allowed Northeastern to walk-off twice against Delaware this past weekend as the Huskies celebrated their first sweep of the Blue Hens since 2009. On Friday, March 27, Rob Fonseca smacked a solo homer to left field that tied the game up at 2-2, helping NU force extra innings. In the bottom of the 13th inning, Burt singled down the left-field line bringing Hanley in to score from third as the Huskies defeated Delaware, 3-2.

Dustin Hunt threw five scoreless innings in a doubleheader-shortened game on March 29, allowing Northeastern to complete a wire-to-wire win against the Blue Hens, 5-3, in seven innings. Joey Scambia belted an inside-the-park home run to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh during game two that helped NU cut a 4-0 deficit to 4-3. A throwing error by Delaware allowed Burt to score the tying run in the ninth, and Hanley singled to right field with the bases loaded to give the Huskies their second walk-off win in three games.

Better safe than sorry

Northeastern outfielder Pat Madigan carries a 20-game reached-base streak into Tuesday's game against Rhode Island, the longest any NU player has enjoyed this season. Freshman Maxwell Burt has built an impressive 12-game reached-base streak of his own, while first baseman Rob Fonseca has made it to first base safely in eight consecutive contests.
