BALTIMORE – After a thrilling 67-64 win over Delaware on Saturday, the Northeastern men's basketball team (21-11) will look to book a place in its second CAA final in the last three seasons when it takes on No. 2 seed UNCW (18-12) on Sunday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. The game will be televised live on NBCSN with Mike Corey and Ron Thompson on the call.
STORY LINES• Two of the CAA's four regular season co-champions, Northeastern and UNCW will meet on Sunday for a place in the CAA championship game. This will be the 17th all-time meeting between the schools, with the series tied at 8-8. UNCW has won three straight matchups, including a 75-68 decision at Matthews Arena on Jan. 5, and a 66-61 triumph on Feb. 14 at Trask Coliseum. In the latter matchup, senior
Scott Eatherton scored a game-high 23 points to lead NU.
• NU and UNCW have met once before in the CAA tournament: a 2006 semifinal matchup won by UNCW, 69-54. Beckham Wyrick led the Seahawks with 11 points and 17 rebounds as the tournament's top seed knocked off No. 5 NU, despite a 17-point effort from Jose Juan Barea.
• The Huskies are coming off a thrilling 67-64 victory over Delaware in Saturday's quarterfinals. Junior
David Walker scored a team-high 17 points and hit four late free throws to help NU maintain a one-possession lead in the final seconds. Delaware's Chivarsky Corbett had a chance to tie in the waning moments, but his long 3-point attempt hit back iron as the final buzzer sounded.
• The win over Delaware improved Northeastern's record to 9-9 all-time in the CAA tournament. Since NU joined the CAA in 2005-06, the Huskies' nine tournament wins are tied with William & Mary for the most among active conference members during that span. Northeastern is 4-0 in the CAA first round, 4-5 in the quarterfinals, 1-3 in the semifinals, and 0-1 in the championship game (2013 vs. JMU).Â
• Northeastern is making its third straight semifinal appearance on Sunday. Two years ago, NU received a bye to the semis as the No. 1 seed, before defeating No. 4 George Mason to advance to the final. Last year, the No. 5 Huskies downed No. 4 Drexel in the quarterfinals to move on to the semifinals vs. No. 1 Delaware.
• With 17 points on Saturday vs. Delaware, Walker brought his career point total to 999 in a Huskies' uniform. With one more point on Sunday, Walker will become the 34th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Quincy Ford hit the milestone earlier this season against Elon on Jan. 31.
• Walker has led Northeastern in scoring in four of the last five games. The Stow, Ohio native has scored in double-figures in nine straight contests and is averaging 17.7 points per game over that span.Â
• Senior
Scott Eatherton enters Sunday's game needing 15 points to reach 1,500 for his career. Eatherton scored 515 points in two seasons with St. Francis (Pa.), before racking up 970 points in two years with the Huskies. In two games vs. UNCW this season, Eatherton has averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest.
