BOSTON – The No. 7 Northeastern men's rowing team was neck and neck with No. 5 Harvard in the varsity eight race through the first 750 meters, but a push from the Crimson over the second half of competition helped Harvard retain the Smith Cup on Saturday morning on the Charles River.

The Huskies, who have continued to build speed throughout the spring season, engaged the Crimson from the start of the V8 race and hung with them through much of the race. With flat conditions and a light tailwind, Harvard built a two-seat advantage as the crews reached the 1000-meter mark and added to it over the course of the final half of the race to win by nearly one length and a time of 5:40.71 to Northeastern's 5:42.97.

In the second varsity, Harvard jumped out to a three-seat lead through the first 500-meters before an incredible surge from Northeastern during the middle 1000. During the span, the Huskies erased the deficit and overtook the Crimson with just 500-meters to go before holding them off for the victory at 5:45.81 (Harvard: 5:48.28)

NU and Harvard rowed a very even third varsity race, with Northeastern ultimately edging the Crimson by less than a half second at 5:54.3 to 5:54.72.

It was a race for second place in the varsity four race as Boston University took control from the outset, but it was the Huskies and Crimson who jockeyed for positioning for the second slot. Harvard was up nearly one length at the 800-meter mark before NU cut it in half as the crews crossed the midway point. From there, Northeastern made an early push to take the lead with about 500 meters remaining, and held off the Crimson in the final stages to finish with a time of 6:47.21.

The Huskies varsity, second varsity and third varsity squads will make the quick turnaround and head to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Badgers on Sunday afternoon in the final race of the regular season.
