Day one results WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Following one of the best outdoor seasons in program history, the men's track and field team claimed its first Colonial Athletic Association championship since joining the conference with an impressive set of finishes during the final day of competition.
"I am extremely proud of this group of men and women," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Cathrine Erickson said. "They believed in something bigger than themselves, they stayed dedicated to their craft and their loyalty and perseverance have prevailed."
The women's team took home fifth place with point total of 98. Several Huskies had outstanding performances in their individual events during the day, earning multiple top finishes.
The men's team entered the day in second place, looking to jump the Tribe of William & Mary to take home the top spot.
Saturday kicked off with the track events. Junior
Donovan Henry dominated in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in an impressive 47.75 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash Henry also finished second overall after crossing the finish line in 21.32 seconds. Jared Lane beat out the competition by a mere 0.1 seconds to earn the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles. Lane completed the event in just 14.60 seconds.
Henry and Lane then teamed up with sophomore
Kyle Darrow and graduate student
Damani Wilson to finish first overall in the 4x100-meter relay, completing the event in just 40.74 seconds. This is the first time in program history the Huskies have won the 4x100-meter relay at the CAA championships.
Matthew Richards enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in his decathlon, finishing second overall with a point total of 5,626. Richards had an outstanding afternoon. The freshman took home the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles, as well as fourth in the discus and the javelin throw. His teammate
Matthew Ferri took home third overall in the decathlon with a point total of 5,623.
Jordan Samuels, a freshman in the program, claimed the silver medal in his event, the triple jump, with an impressive mark of 14.02 meters.
Paul Duffey, who qualified for the NCAA indoor championships this season, continued his dominance in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 1:52.50. The sophomore had to sprint to the finish, but ultimately secured the top spot. Duffey's success would continue as he took home the bronze in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:51.66. Stephen Sollowin and
Zachary Fraielli, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 3:51.78 and 3:52.73.
Peter Katsarakes, another freshman in the program, shined in the 400-meter hurdles, earning second overall after posting an outstanding time of just 54.09 seconds.
Kevin Rosenberg, competing in his final CAA outdoor championship, claimed his silver medial in the shot put with a mark of 16.51 meters.
Ryan Kim finished just behind the redshirt senior, posting an outstanding toss of 16.03 meters.
"We had some athletes perform extremely well and we had some athletes show an incredible amount of heart," Erickson said. "I am most happy with the fact that the athletes were there to pick each other up when someone fell short or gave everything they had."
"This is a program win and I am proud to bring this back to Boston for all of the alumni, staff and administration who have continued to support us."
The Huskies' success continued as
Kyle Darrow showcased his prowess in the 100-meter dash, taking home the silver medal with a time of 10.60 seconds. The men's high jump was also a strong event for the Huskies as
Alex Julian claimed third overall after clearing 1.92 meters.
On the women's side, multiple Huskies shined, including
Jessica Dunnigan and
Kelsey Sullivan who took home third and fourth in their heptathlon with point totals of 4,538 and 4,531.
In the 4x100-meter relay, a team of
Jessica Scott,
Camille Gooden,
Victoria Alexander and Dunnigan, finished fifth overall with a time of 47.47 seconds.
Kate Johnstone, meanwhile, shined in the 1500-meter run, finishing second overall with a time of 4:27.42. The sophomore also competed in the 800-meter run, completing the event in 2:17.57 to earn eighth place.
Sophomores
Jordan O'Dea and
Lucy Young took home the silver and bronze in the 3000-meter steeplechase with impressive times of 10:28.04 and 10:35.18. Gooden continued her success in the 400-meter dash, claiming the gold with an outstanding time of 55.11 seconds.
"It was a heck of a fight, and a job well done by our men," Erickson said at the end of the event.
Next up for Northeastern are the New England Championships, which are set to begin on Thursday, May 7 and run through Saturday, May 9. The meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center.
