BOSTON – The Northeastern swimming & diving team opens the 2015-16 season at Barletta Natatorium in a dual-meet against the Wagner Seahawks, Saturday, Sept. 26, at 12 p.m. This meet marks the program's earliest showing in more than 15 years. The Huskies look to bring in their first win of the campaign with a roster of 27, packed with depth and greater talent across the board.

Northeastern 2014 highlights
The team finished last year 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The season was highlighted by a fifth place finish at the CAA Championship, the program's best all-time finish at a league title meet, and nine new school records. The Huskies were honored for their performance in the pool and in the classroom. Jacquelyn Gover was named CAA Rookie Diver of the Year, only the second NU diver in program history to garner the league's first-year accolade, and the team was honored as a Scholar All-America Team by the CSCAA in August. Head coach Roy Coates closed out the campaign with a 146-95 Northeastern career record after toasting four seniors off in his twenty-second season at the helm.

This season for the Huskies
NU will see healthy competition with meets against Ivy League contender Harvard, Big Ten's Rutgers, familiar foe Vermont of America East and all of the CAA competitors. The Huskies will compete in six meets before their annual training trip to Puerto Rico in late December. NU will welcome 2016 with the Delaware Pod Meet, a dual-meet against Vermont, the Dartmouth Invitational, a dual-meet with LIU Brooklyn and UConn's Husky Invitational - all leading up the CAA Championship in February. In the words of coach Coates, "We're trying to improve every individual to as high a level as we can. If I can get you to be the best swimmer or diver that you can be, we'll be a better team."

The squad
The Red and Black dawn a new season led by senior captains Sophie Browne and Megan Rutter, and junior captain Delaney Lanker. The Huskies' seasoned crew features four seniors and seven juniors, plus six sophomores and 10 new faces - nine first-years and one transfer. Ten Huskies will participate in freestyle events, six in backstroke, six for the IM, five with breaststroke, five on the diving block and four in the butterfly.

Rhode Island Open Water Swim
Earlier this month, The Huskies participated in the Swim Across America (SAA) Rhode Island Open Water Swim in Narragansett, R.I. to raise money for cancer research and treatment at Providence's Women & Infants Hospital. NU raised more than $9,900 and was one of the top-10 teams to contribute to an overall $150,000 goal at the event. Associate head coach Katie McCann earned the inaugural Betsy Bilodeau Award from SAA, an honor given to an individual that exemplifies the same energy, compassion and commitment to the fight against cancer as Ms. Bilodeau had, a long-time member of the SAA and Women & Infants community, who recently lost her battle with cancer.

What it means to be a Husky
If senior Megan Rutter could describe her experience with Northeastern swimming & diving in one word, it would be: Empowering.

All-time against Wagner
Saturday marks the first meeting all-time between the Huskies and Seahawks.

Wagner 2014 highlights
The Seahawks registered a 9-4-1 overall record and a 6-1-0 record in the Northeast Conference (NEC) under head coach Colin Shannahan. It was a memorable season for the four seniors as Wagner won its senior night meet vs. St. Francis Brooklyn and capped off the year with a second place finish at the NEC Championship. Junior Anu Nihipali earned a shot at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, a first in program history, and the Seahawks earned the NEC Women's Swimming and Diving Sportsmanship Award.

Wagner this season
Shannahan returns for his fourth season at Wagner with a roster of 22 student-athletes, including nine seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores, two first-years and a new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Megan Zarriello.

Coming up
Northeastern will be back in Barletta on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. to play host to Harvard in an exhibition meet.
