Postgame InterviewDEDHAM, Mass. - In its first overtime game of the 2015 season, the Northeastern field hockey team fell in a tough overtime battle with cross-state rival and 18th-ranked UMass Thursday night, 2-1.
"I thought we played pretty strong today but it obviously wasn't enough," said head coach
Cheryl Murtagh. "We passed well. I thought our defense stepped up much better than the other day."
Â
Kristin Abreu tallied her first goal of the season, and the first of her career, for the Huskies while
Becky Garner recorded six saves on the night.
Kate Carlson led NU with four shots during the game.
Â
The Huskies dominated in penalty corner opportunities 9-5 and took 16 shots on the night to UMass' 12.
Â
UMass was led by Melanie Kreusch who recorded three shots, two on goal and one goal on the day while Sam Carlino had nine saves in the net.
Â
The Minutewomen got on the board first early into the first half as Kreusch sent a deflected shot past the Huskies net minder
Becky Garner for the early advantage.
Â
Northeastern stifled the UMass attack the rest of the half and entered halftime down just 1-0, for the third straight game, against its third straight ranked opponent.
Â
The Huskies got on the board to tie things up at one-all when Abreu netted her first goal of the season. Off of Northeastern's sixth penalty corner of the game,
June Curry-Lindahl sent in the corner to
Natalie Stewart who corralled it over to Carlson. Carlson dished it back to Stewart who sent it in to
Laura MacLachlan who then ticked it out to Abreu for the score.
Â
With Northeastern dominating the offense during the second half, the Minutewomen didn't have many chances to respond and the game was sent to overtime marking the first overtime game for the Huskies since a 2-1 OT loss to Maine on Oct. 19, 2014. The OT game was the first vs. UMass since a 4-3 double overtime win over the Minutewomen on Sept. 14, 2012.
Â
Just 3:53 into the overtime period, Nicole Miller sent in the gamewinner for UMass to hand them their second win of the season.
Â
The Huskies are back in action this Sunday, September 6 at 1 p.m. at Providence.Â
