HighlightsNORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Dylan Sikura scored twice, and the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (8-12-4, 3-8-3) went 6-of-6 on the penalty kill to skate to a 5-2 victory at Merrimack (7-12-5, 2-6-5) on Friday night at Lawler Arena.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Huskies scored five of the game's final six goals to win its fifth straight game and extend their unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1).
Mike McMurtry,
Lincoln Griffin and
John Stevens also scored for NU, while
Ryan Ruck made 22 saves in goal.
Brett Seney and Mathieu Tibbett scored for the Warriors and Colin Delia made 28 saves in goal after the Huskies outshot MC 33-24. Neither team could capitalize on the power play in a penalty filled game, with both clubs going 0-of-6 on the man advantage.
Goal descriptions:• Merrimack took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game on Seney's fifth goal of the year. After taking a pass from Mathieu Tibbet at the point, Jared Kolquist fired a shot towards the net that Seney redirected from between the hashmarks, beating Ruck glove side for an early Warrior lead.
• Northeastern leveled the score at 1-1 less than two minutes into the second period when Sikura banged home his sixth goal of the year, and fourth in the last three games, after a solid shift from the
Adam Gaudette –
Mike McMurtry – Sikura line. Gaudette began the play by winning a puck battle below the goal line and tossing the puck out in front. McMurtry, tied up by his man atop the crease, kicked the puck over to Sikura at the right post for the tap in past Delia.
• The Warriors jumped right back in front, however, two minutes after the Sikura tally when Mathieu Tibbet hammered home his fourth of the year. With Merrimack in transition out of the defensive zone, Brian Christie sped down the left side and around the net before finding Tibbet at the right dot for the one-timer past Ruck.
• McMurtry made it 2-2 with 11:07 left in the second period on his fourth goal of the season, knocking home a rebound after chaos in the front of the Warrior net off an initial shot by
Dustin Darou at the point and a follow up from Gaudette in front.
• Northeastern took its first lead of the night with 2:36 left in the second period on Griffin's second goal in as many games, and fourth of the year.
Sam Kurker created the scoring chance by chasing down a Warrior defenseman behind the net and causing a turnover. Kurker then found Griffin speeding towards the cage and hit him with a pass for a shot that got under Delia for the score.
• The Huskies wasted no time in extended their lead to two just 29 seconds into the third period as
John Stevens buried his seventh goal of the year, taking a pass from
Nolan Stevens and beating Delia shortside.
• Sikura buried his second of the night 1:31 later to give the Huskies a 5-2 edge. After McMurtry entered the zone and dropped to Roy at the left side, threaded a pass across the seam to Sikura at the right side for a low one-timer into the open net before Delia could recover.
Stats of the game:• Northeastern is now 51-42-10 all-time against Merrimack.
• NU extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1), tied for the second longest active unbeaten streak in the nation. It's also tied for the seventh longest unbeaten streak in team history.
• Friday night marked the first time all season that Northeastern conceded the first goal and came back to win the game (NU is 1-10-4 when its opponent scores first).
• McMurtry extended his point streak to eight games (three goals, 10 assists), a career long, while Gaudette extended his point streak to a career-long six games (two goals, nine assists).
• Sikura has five goals in his last three games and Kurker has five points (two goals, three assists) in his last two games.
•
Kevin Roy played in his first game since Nov. 13 after missing the previous 12 games with an upper body injury.
The road ahead:• Northeastern and Merrimack will meet again in the series finale tomorrow night at Matthews Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
