Huskies fall 71-67 to Elon

David Walker tallied 25 points in the loss, his seventh game of 25+ points this season

BOSTON, Mass. – Despite 25 points by David Walker, his seventh such game this season, the Northeasten men's basketball team dropped a 71-67 contest to Elon Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
 
Walker connected on six 3-pointers on the night, his sixth such game with 5+ treys this season. In addition to his game-high 25 points, Walker added three rebounds and three steals.
 
The Huskies drop to 12-11 on the season and 4-6 in CAA play with the loss. Elon improves to 13-10 on the year and 4-6 in conference play.
 
T.J. Williams also finished in double figures, his fourth-straight game with double-digit scoring, dropping 12 on the night.
 
Dmitri Thompson paced the Phoenix with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
 
While the Huskies capitalized on Elon's 16 turnovers, notching 20 points (Elon's had eight off of Northeastern's 11 turnovers), the Phoenix outscored the Huskies 42-20 in the paint.
 
The first started off back-and-forth as the Huskies gained an edge via a Jimmy Marshall three, followed by a Walker three, his first of six, but Elon chipped away and with 13:30 left in the first half evened the score at 14-all.
 
The Huskies took off from there, slowly building a lead thanks to 11 straight points from Walker before Kwesi Abakah opened things up 29-20 with a slam.  The Huskies went on a 10-0 run to gain a 35-20 advantage, the largest of the first half.
 
Elon was able to chip away a little, but the Huskies headed into the locker room with an 11-point lead at the half.
 
In the second half, Walker came out firing extending the lead to 14 with the three to start the half.
 
But Elon chipped away at the lead cutting it to a single-digit deficit on a Luke Eddy 3-pointer and bringing the game within one with 10:55 left in the second half.
 
The Huskies answered back, extending the lead to five with back-to-back threes from Walker and Devon Begley, and after Elon made it a one possession game, Northeastern extended the lead to eight after Williams drilled a three and Miller completed a three-point play with 8:27 left in the half.
 
Elon once again answered back and made it a one-point game with 2:35 left, taking its first lead since 14:47 in the first half with a Tyler Seibring jumper with 1:14 left in the ball game.
 
Two free throws by Tanner Samson extended the Elon lead to three and another couple free throws by Thompson gave Elon its largest lead of the game, 5 points, with nine seconds remaining in action.
 
T.J. Williams drove to the basket and converted to cut the lead to three, but a made free throw by Samson made it a four-point game and gave the Phoenix the win.
 
The Huskies will look to end their four-game losing streak when they return to Matthews on Thursday, February 4 with their first game of the month vs. William & Mary. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet.

  • Northeastern falls to 12-11 on the season and 4-6 in CAA play with the loss
  • David Walker finished with 25 points, his seventh game this season with at least 25 points
  • With the 25 points, Walker moved into 12th place on the Northeastern all-time scoring chart past John Williams (1,443 – 1984-88)
  • Walker is now 10 points shy of passing Quincy Ford (1,474, active) for 11th place and 11 points away from moving into the top-10 past Marcus Blossom (1,475 - 1997-01)
  • Walker also finished the game with six 3-pointers, the sixth time this season that he has finished a game with 5+ treys.
  • Walker currently has 222 career 3-pointers, just one shy of tying Matt Janning (223 – 2006-10) for third place all-time.
  • Northeastern finished with 11 threes on the night, the 12th time in 23 games that the Huskies have notched 10+ threes in a game.
  • T.J. Williams finished the game with 12 points, his fourth straight game scoring in double-digits
