BOSTON – With the eyes of the world rowing community focused on Boston over the weekend, the Northeastern men's and women's programs posted strong performances at the world-renowned Head of the Charles Regatta.

Despite poor weather throughout the weekend, more than 400,000 spectators flocked to the banks of the Charles River for the 52nd rowing of one of the sport's most heralded events. Northeastern and the famed regatta are intimately linked. Ernie Arlett, NU's first coach, is credited with the creation of the Head of the Charles. Arlett proposed a "head of the river" race, similar in tradition to those held in his native England, to Cambridge Boat Club members D'Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre, and Jack Vincent 50 years ago.

The men's championship eights race featured six student-athletes who rowed in the first varsity at last year's IRA Championships, with the team finishing 12th in a field of 26 boats at 15:30.095. Washington won the event with a time of 14:40.823 while Cal (14:52.710), Harvard (14:58.608) and Yale (15:03.099) took the second through fourth spots, respectively.

In the men's championship fours, stroked by Texas Lawton, the Huskies kept a steady pace throughout the three-mile course, crossing Weld at 9:51.812 before finishing 10th overall with a time of 17:37.018.

The women's championship eights, with Haley Doucette serving as the coxswain and Madison Mailey in the stroke seat, took 18th of 33 at 17:54.424 after reaching Riverside at 4:11.863, Weld at 9:55.397 and CBC at 15:04.449.

Rowing got underway on Saturday as the men's team took second in the club eights. It was three local crews vying for the top spot with Harvard, Northeastern and Boston University all fighting for the quickest time, with Harvard ultimately finishing first at 14:58.331, followed by the Huskies (15:32.553) in second and Terriers in third (15:37.121).

The women's club eights also found success on Saturday afternoon, taking fourth overall with a time of 16:59.350 for a boat stroked by Jocelyn Mongillo. Brown (16:50.417) took first, followed by Syracuse (16:54.126) and Radcliffe (16:55.830).

The Huskies also had several alumni participate in event during the day on Saturday, including an alumni eight that finished second overall at 14:56.055, stroked by current assistant coach Justin Jones. The women's alumni eights, meanwhile, took 26th at 18:59.358.

The Huskies will be back in action on November 12 when Northeastern competes in the Foot of the Charles.
