BOSTON – The Northeastern men's rowing team went into the winter break on a positive note Sunday morning as both the first varsity and varsity four earned first place finishes at the Foot of the Charles.
The 1V, coxed by
Tara Fish, completed the 2.5-mile course in 12:36.0 racing against the likes of Brown, Harvard and Boston University. The Huskies were able to hold of Brown's 'A' boat by 2.1 seconds, while Harvard's freshman eight took third overall with a time of 12:38.5.
"Winning this race is a really hard thing to do," said head coach
John Pojednic. "It's a race against some of the top teams in the country, and coming out on top is a meaningful step in our year long process. We look at this race as an indicator of how our team is going. Early in the fall, at the Head of the Charles for example, our speed is just a function of what the guys did over the summer. By the time we get to this part of the year, the results are a product of the work we have done together as a team, and the culture we are trying to build.
Northeastern found similar success in the varsity four, finishing the MIT Boathouse to Newell Boathouse stretch in 12:58.4, led by coxswain
Louis Copolov and stroke
Trevor Appier. The Huskies top boat finished more than six seconds ahead of Harvard's 'A' boat (13:04.0), while Brown's 'A' boat took third at 13:06.4.
The Huskies 'B' boat, coxed by
Alexander Gass, finished sixth overall (13:16.9) while NU's 'C' and 'D' boat took 13th (13:27.3) and 18th (13:39.5).
"I hope the racing today motivates our young and developing team to train hard as we move into the winter and prepare for our spring racing season," Pojednic said.
Northeastern will continue to work on the water and in the tanks over the winter months before returning to competition on April 2 when the Huskies host Penn on the Charles River with the Burk Cup on the line.
