CLEMSON, S.C. – The Northeastern women's soccer team (14-7-1) gave No. 3 seed Clemson (14-4-3) all it could handle in a 1-0 Tigers' win on Sunday in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Riggs Field.
Clemson's Shannon Horgan broke a scoreless deadlock with the game's only goal at the 60:36 mark to help the Tigers advance to the second round and a meeting with Arkansas next weekend.
Northeastern battled wire-to-wire with the ACC regular season champions and had several close calls at the offensive end. Sophomore
Valentina Soares Gache tested Clemson keeper Kailen Sheridan with a shot in the first half, and sophomore
Nicole Gorman blasted an attempt into Sheridan's arms in the second stanza.
At the other end, sophomore keeper
Nathalie Nidetch produced a strong effort in goal with three saves, including a diving denial on a Jenna Polonski drive midway through the second half.
The Huskies' back-line of senior
Krista Meaglia, senior
Jenny Sinclair, sophomore
Eve Goulet and senior
Mackenzie Dowd frustrated the high-powered Clemson attack throughout the 90 minutes as the Tigers registered just four shots on goal.
