STORRS, Conn.  –
T.J. Williams put up a game-high 20 points as the Northeastern men's basketball team earned its first win over Connecticut since Dec. 28, 1985 in a 64-61 victory Monday night at Gampel Pavilion.
Â
The win was the first ever at Gampel for Northeastern.
Â
Alex Murphy nearly doubled his career high for rebounds pulling down 15 on the nightand was just one point away from his first career double-double, netting nine points. Murphy also dished out three assists and made three steals on the night.
Â
Donnell Gresham notched back-to-back double-digit games with his 13-point effort, putting a game-high 10 points on the board at the half, while his only basket of the second half, a three, proved to be the game-winner for Northeastern.
Â
Terry Larrier led the way for UConn with 17 points while Jalen Adams had 15 to go along with five rebounds.
Â
Northeastern jumped out to a fast 6-0 lead behind threes from
Jeremy Miller and
Shawn Occeus eventually making it a 12-4 ballgame at the first media break. They would hold UConn to just four points through the first seven minutes of action.
Â
Coming out of the under-12 break, UConn netted back-to-back-to-back buckets to even the score at 15-all behind five points from Jalen Adams alone, and took a 20-19 lead, UConn's first of the ballgame over 11 minutes into action.
Â
But as soon as the Connecticut Huskies took the lead, Miller took it back hitting a three of his own down the other end of the court. Both teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes and after UConn took a 31-29 lead, Northeastern rallied off three straight baskets, while UConn had six straight misses to end the half with Northeastern holding a 35-31 lead.
Â
UConn evened things out with the first two baskets of the second half and held the Huskies without a field goal for nearly the first five minutes of play, but Northeastern would not back down regaining a five-point lead with 12:49 left in the second half thanks to a put back by
Anthony Green.
Â
UConn would whittle the score back down to just a one-point game with 6:48 remaining but Northeastern battled back, and, with 2:16 remaining Gresham silenced the Gampel crowd with the decisive three-pointer to seal the victory.
Â
The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they head across town for the Steve Wright Classic on the campus of Boston University. The weekend will begin with a rematch against the Terriers, Friday night at 6 p.m. at Case Gym followed by a game on Saturday at 6 p.m. against LIU Brooklyn and wrapping up on Sunday against Maine at 2 p.m.
