BOSTON  – Despite a 14-2 second half run, the Northeastern men's basketball team fell to Boston University Friday night 65-63 at Case Gymnasium, snapping Northeastern's three-game win streak over the Terriers.
Â
The Huskies (2-1) held a 67-55 lead late in the second half, but did not have a field goal in the final eight minutes and 40 seconds of play as Boston University (1-1) snuck away with the victory in the waning seconds. Â
Â
T.J. Williams had 24 points on the night for Northeastern, his third-straight 20-point game to begin the season and was 7-for-12 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line while dishing out four assists.
Â
Alex Murphy added 13 points, but was just 6-of-13 from the charity stripe while pulling down five rebounds.
Jeremy Miller added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Huskies.
Â
Boston University was led by Eric Fanning who had 17 points and five rebounds while Hankerson, who netted the game-winner finished with 13 points.
Â
Northeastern got out to a quick, 8-4 start, but unlike a week ago, Boston University kept the Huskies within check in the first half. With 12:36 left in the first stanza, BU evened the score and then went on to take a 15-12 lead, their first of the game, using back-to-back threes by Destin Barnes and Cheddi Mosely.
Â
Northeastern bounced back with a pair of threes of their own keeping within one possession until the 3:37 mark. Coming out of the under-four media, the Terriers went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead 37-27 with 2:50 left in the first half.
Â
The Huskies cut the lead down to four, on a
Jimmy Marshall three, but Fanning hit a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left in the half to send the Terriers to the locker room with a 39-33 halftime lead.
Â
In the second half, the Huskies came out firing. Murphy capitalized on a BU foul and turned it into two quick points for the Huskies. On the next possession,
Shawn Occeus went up against a much bigger Justin Alston, blocked his shot and send the ball down the court where Murphy put up another bucket to bring Northeastern to within two.
Â
After a pair of Fanning free throws,
Devon Begley evened the score at 43-all with 16:10 left in the second half on a three from the top left corner of the arc.
Â
After Begley's game-tying basket, the Huskies went on a 14-2 run over a nine-and-a-half-minute span to take a 67-55 lead over the host-Terriers.
Â
But BU fought and clawed back into the game cutting the lead to three points on a Fanning layup with just over a minute remaining in the ballgame as Hankerson netted the game-winner with 4.6 seconds left on the clock to escape Northeastern.
Â
The Huskies continue their time at the Steve Wright Classic on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. when they take on LIU Brooklyn in game two of the tournament. Online streaming is unavailable for the rest of the weekend, however, follow along via the live stats and the @GoNUMBasketball twitter.
