HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite hauling in a season high, 47 rebounds, the Northeastern women's basketball team had difficulty flipping a halftime deficit against Quinnipiac around as the Huskies suffered a 76-59 road defeat on Sunday afternoon.
Â
NU attained a +11 rebounding advantage (47-36) against the Bobcats, benefiting mainly from
Francesca Sally's 12 boards as well as six rebounds apiece from
Gabby Giacone and
Claudia Ortiz. Sally also notched 10 points, finishing with her second double-double of the season while extending her double-digit scoring streak to nine straight games.
Â
Giacone equaled
Jess Genco's team-high mark of 12 points, while Ortiz tallied 10 points on four-of-six shooting. Together with Sally, the four Huskies combined for all but 15 of Northeastern's 59 points.
Â
As a team, Northeastern (2-2) struggled to find its shooting rhythm during the opening quarter, but recovered as the game progressed. After a two-of-11 start from the field, the Huskies returned to their form, closing the game with a 40 percent shooting clip during the final three quarters.
Â
Adily Martucci led Quinnipiac (4-0) with 15 points off the bench, knocking down six of her eight field goal attempts. Martucci netted three of the Bobcats' 12 3-point baskets, while Jay Fen and Brittany Martin each hit two. Paula Strautmane recorded 12 points to lead Quinnipiac's starting five.
Â
Northeastern countered the Bobcats' 9-0 run to open the contest with five straight points, keeping Quinnipiac scoreless for more than five minutes of game time. However, another 7-0 stretch by the home team right after put the Huskies at a 16-5 disadvantage with 8:43 remaining in the second quarter. Sally came through with five points during the period and made a layup during the final minute of the half to close the gap at 30-16, but Carly Fabbri would hit a 3-pointer moments later that solidified the Bobcats' halftime edge at 33-16.
Â
Giacone's eight-point third quarter kept the Huskies competitive with Quinnipiac. Ortiz converted a three-point play from the foul line with 3:21 remaining in the third, the possession before
Loren Lassiter sank two free throws to return the game to a 20-point margin at 52-32. Genco knocked down Northeastern's first 3-point field goal with 1:47 left in the period, but the Huskies were unable to narrow the gap to 17 until the fourth quarter.
Â
Northeastern will begin a three-game stay in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, on Thursday, Nov. 24, when the Huskies kick off the 2016 Cancun Challenge against Stanford.
