Swimming and diving goes head-to-head with George Mason and Towson

BOSTON – The Northeastern swimming and diving team will head to Fairfax, Va. to go head-to-head with George Mason and CAA opponent Towson. The dual meets will take place over two days and will feature three additional races to the standard 16 dual meet slate. George Mason elected to add the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 medley relay and the 400 individual medley.
 
LAST TIME OUT
In its home opener, Northeastern split dual meets against James Madison and New Hampshire.
           
Against James Madison, a perennial powerhouse in the CAA, the Huskies were edged 169-136. The two teams were knotted at 122 going into the final three events but the Dukes managed to slip by with enough points from the one-meter dive, 200 individual medley and 400 freestyle relay. Northeastern held a 28-10 advantage in the butterfly races as well as a 20-18 lead in the backstroke races. James Madison scored 27 points to Northeastern's 11 in the breaststroke and had a 16-3 advantage in medley race scores. The Huskies took seven first place finishes against the Dukes including both first place marks in the butterfly. The teams tied in the relay events, each scoring 17 points.
           
Head-to-head with the Wildcats, the Huskies claimed a decisive 195-105 victory. Notching 13 first place finishes, Northeastern held an advantage in every stroke except the 200 individual medley. Most notably were the Red and Black's 31-7 and 28-6 lead in the backstroke and relay events respectively. Northeastern also outscored New Hampshire 28-10 in diving and 55-40 in freestyle races.
           
Eight new season highs were set during the meet and rookie Megan Clark swam within .6 seconds of the school record in the 50 freestyle.
 
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
To open the 2016-17 season, the Patriots participated in the Potomac Relays hosted by American University in Washington D.C., placing first out of five squads in the competition. The George Mason women took first place in all nine events, paired with its men's team that claimed first in eight of nine events.
 
Following an exciting start to the season, the Patriots were setback with two defeats in a tri-meet at Navy with UMBC. George Mason was outscored 187-106 and 207-93 against the Patriot League and America East opponents.
 
Returning to Fairfax for the home opener at Jim McKay Natatorium rejuvenated the Patriots, who took a 167-127 victory over Delaware. The women's team won nine individual events against the Blue Hens highlighted by Sydney Fisher's first place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly as well as two first place relay spots. the George Mason divers took second and third in both events against Delaware.
 
Next, the Patriots headed to Richmond for an A-10 showdown. George Mason defeated Davidson on day one, advancing to the winners bracket against Duquesne on day two. The Patriots were edged 156-131 on day two.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Towson has already competed four times this season, claiming three straight victories against Georgetown (158-142), UMBC (167-133) and CAA foe William and Mary (150-144).
 
Towson swept this week's CAA Swimmer and Diver of the week awards, with Kendall Krumenacker and Kelsey Jehl earning the respective honors. Krumenacker won three individual events against the Tribe and Jehl placed first and third on the three and one meter boards. This marks the first weekly honor this season for Krumenacker and the second for Jehl.
 
Against William and Mary, the Tigers posted 25 top three finishes and extended their home winning streak to 21 straight meets. Towson swept the 1000 meter freestyle and claimed first place in both diving events.
 
Last season, the Tigers went 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the CAA and earned third place at conference championships.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
Freshman Megan Clark will get an early homecoming as the Huskies compete in her hometown of Fairfax, Va. The rookie is set to have an impressive season, finishing within .6 seconds of the 50 freestyle school record with just two collegiate meets under her belt. 
 
ON DECK
The Huskies will participate in their third Frank Elm Invitational Nov. 18th through 20th hosted by Rutgers. Northeastern has consistently performed extremely well at the meet and will be taking on eight competitors at the invitational. The competition includes Rutgers, LIU Post, LIU Brooklyn, Liberty, Columbia, James Madison, Navy and Central Connecticut State.
