PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A career high four-point game from junior
McKenna Brand and a pair of goals from senior
Heather Mottau lifted the No. 10 Northeastern women's hockey team (11-4-3, 7-2-2 WHEA) to a 5-3 win over the Providence Friars (8-9-1, 4-5-1 WHEA) on Wednesday night at Schneider Arena. With the win, Northeastern improved to 6-0-1 on the road this season.
Scoring began early as the Friars netted their first goal just over halfway into the opening period. Mottau and Cassidy Carels then traded two goals each, before a tally from
Denisa Krizova knotted the game at three entering the final frame. Brand book-ended the third period with the game winner at 1:46 and then sealed the win with an empty-netter at 18:17.
The Huskies shut down two of the Friars' three power play opportunities while Providence negated all four of Northeastern's attempts.
Northeastern outshot the Friars, 37-28, including a 28-13 margin over the last two periods.
Goal Recaps
• With Mottau in the box for hooking, Kate Friesen passed to Cassidy MacPherson, who laid the puck off in the slot for Blair Parent, who punched it in from the edge of the crease to put the Friars on the board first.
• Sophomore
Maddie Hartman laid the puck along the left boards for senior
Paige Savage, who sent it to the front of the net where Mottau pushed it past Myers to tie the game at 18:25 of the opening frame.
• Just 26 seconds later, Carels forced a turnover near the center line and sped up the ice on a breakaway to give the Friars a one-goal advantage heading into the second frame.
• NU tied the game at 6:40 of the second period when Krizova sent a rocket across the slot to Mottau, who quickly angled it to the back of the cage before Myers could get to the other side of the net.
• The Friars jumped back ahead when Madison Sansone gained possession at the NU blue line and passed it to Carels at the top of the crease at 12:46 of the middle period.
• The Huskies responded again when Brand dropped a pass to MacMillan at the right point for a shot that Krizova was able to redirect home at the left of the cage at 16:41 of the second stanza.
• Northeastern took its first lead of the game when Scamurra won an offensive-zone faceoff to Krizova behind the net. Krizova quickly moved the puck to Brand for a one-timer in front of the net to make it 4-3 NU just 1:46 into the third period.
• Brand then sealed the game with an empty-netter at 18:17, gaining possession in NU's defensive zone, before making a break for the Friars' empty net.
