Williams Gamewinner
ROCHESTER, Mich. – With time expiring,
T.J. Williams hit a falling down, buzzer-beating jumper to help the Northeastern men's basketball team to a 61-59 victory over Oakland Tuesday night.
With the win, the Huskies handed Oakland (9-2) it's first home loss of the season and improved to 2-0 in the state of Michigan this week to close out the non-conference season with a 7-5 record.
Williams finished the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals, notching his eighth 20-point game of the season, third double-double of his career and second of the season, and his first career buzzer-beating shot.
The first half play of
Maxime Boursiquot gave the Huskies a hefty 36-27 halftime advantage as the freshman finished with a career best 16 points and eight rebounds, 10 of which came in the first half.
Anthony Green added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with five rebounds and a career-high tying three blocks.
The Golden Grizzlies were led by Jalen Hayes' 18 points and five rebounds while Nick Daniels and Chris Paolmbizio each added nine.
The Huskies had 27 field goals on the night, second most this season, but only three from deep. Oakland shot just 34.9 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from behind the arc and had a season-low 59 points in the loss.
Oakland got out to a fast 10-3 lead using an 8-0 run, when head coach
Bill Coen called a timeout to calm the team down. The Huskies responded quickly going on a 16-0 run of their own, while Oakland missed 15 straight shots, holding the Golden Grizzlies scoreless for eight-and-a-half minutes.
During that span, Boursiquot tallied six of his 10 first half points.
Devon Begley halted the Grizzlies run with a layup and
Alex Murphy and Boursiquot quickly added baskets of their own to get within one.
Bolden Brace followed up with a fast lay-in while Green added a jumper and later a slam to put the Huskies up by seven.
A pair of Boursiquot layups gave the Huskies a 21-10 edge before Jalen Hayes finally got Oakland on the board though the Huskies headed into the locker room at the half with a nine-point lead.
Oakland battled back in the second half getting within four with just over 11 minutes remaining in play. With the Huskies up six with just over four minutes remaining, Daniels his back-to-back treys to even the score at 54-all.
But with The O'rena loud, Williams went down and hit a clutch three, one of Northeastern's three treys on the night, to silence the crowd. After trading a pair of baskets Martez Walker was fouled shooting a three and hit all three to tie the game at 59-all with 9.6 seconds remaining.
Then on the ensuing possession, with ice in his veins, Williams went down and hit the buzzer-beating game-winner to give Northeastern its first ever win over Oakland.
The Huskies have 10 days off for winter break and will return to action with their CAA opener against William and Mary on Saturday, December 31 at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The Huskies will begin the conference season at home for the first time since 2014-15 and will kick off the conference campaign against William & Mary for the first time ever.
