The Eagles opened the game with two goals in the first eight minutes of the game before
Dylan Sikura made it a 2-1 contest through 20 minutes of play. JD Dudek, who finished with two goals on the night, and David Cotton struck less than a minute apart midway through the second period to extend the BC lead to 4-1 before
Jeremy Davies netted a power play tally to cut the deficit to 4-2. A Stevens goal with 9:29 to play would make it 4-3, but a Scott Savage goal with 4:34 to play gave the Eagles the win.
Ryan Ruck made 30 saves in goal for Northeastern while Joe Woll had 28 stops for BC at the other end. Sikura (one goal, one assist) and
Zach Aston-Reese (two assists) both finished with multi-point nights while Colin White and Matthew Gaudreau chipped in with two and three assists, respectively.
The Huskies, who were outshot by a slim 35-31 margin, capitalized on one of its five power plays while the penalty killing unit held Boston College to an 0-of-5 showing on the man advantage.
Goal descriptions:
• Boston College bolted out to a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the contest on Dudek's fifth of the season. After Colin White won a face-off into the corner, Matthew Gaudreau quickly gathered the puck before spotting Dudek open in the slot and hitting him with a pass. Dudek did the rest, quickly settling the puck and ripping a shot into the top corner for the score.
• The Eagles made it 2-1 with 12:30 to play in the opening period on Walker's third of the season when the freshman picked off a clearing attempt from a Husky and went in alone on Ruck, wristing a shot top shelf to extend the BC lead to two.
• Northeastern cut the deficit to 2-1 when Sikura potted his 10th of the year near the midway mark of the frame. With the Huskies transitioning up ice,
Trevor Owens sent a stretch pass up to
John Stevens at the attacking blue line. Stevens then patiently waited for support before sending a lateral pass over to
Zach Aston-Reese entering the zone. Aston-Reese would take the puck to the right side before firing it low on goal that Sikura got a stick on past Woll.
• The Eagles used a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take a three-goal advantage, beginning with Dudek's second of the evening with 10:59 left in the second period. After Michael Kim found Gaudreau alone in the left corner of the attacking zone, Gaudreau found Dudek joining the rush and hit him with a pass entering the zone. Dudek, in the slot, then fired a shot top corner for a 3-1 Boston College lead.
• BC extended the lead to three 55 seconds later with a goal from Cotton. As the Eagles continued to pressure the Huskies in the NU zone, Ruck was able to handle a shot from Jesper Mattila from the point, but Cotton was waiting on the doorstep for the rebound. Ruck would get a pad on Cotton's first attempt, but he followed his shot and knocked home the second attempt for his fifth of the year.
• The Huskies continued to fight, though, and made it 4-2 with a power play conversion with 7:11 remaining in the middle frame. After Sikura received a pass from Stevens, Sikura made it look like he was going to send a shot in on goal, freezing Woll, but instead slid it across to Davies, who hammered it into the open goal for his third of the year.
• Stevens made it a one-goal game midway through the third period on his second of the year. As Stevens carried the puck into the Eagle zone, he chipped a pass off the stick of
Eric Williams and over to Aston-Reese. Aston-Reese then set up shop behind the goal before finding Stevens with a pass as he crashed the net for a one-timer over the glove of Woll.
• The Eagles regained their two-goal lead with 4:34 left in regulation on Savage's third of the year when the Eagles went in two-on-one after a loose puck in the neutral zone, where Gaudreau found Savage at the left side for a snap shot past Ruck to make it 5-3.
