InfographicTOWSON, Md. – Fighting hard until the final buzzer, the Northeastern men's basketball team held Towson to just 44 points including 7-of-25 shooting in the second half, en route to a 47-44 victory at SECU Arena Thursday night.
Â
Northeastern was led by
David Walker who notched 18 points on the night for the Huskies helping them back to .500 with a 13-13 record on the year and 5-8 in conference play. The win snapped a six-game losing streak dating back to Jan. 21.
Â
With his first of four 3-pointers on the night, Walker earned his 1,499, 1,500 and 1,501
st career points becoming just the 10
th ever Northeastern player to achieve the feat and the first since Chaisson Allen who crossed the 1,500 mark in the 2010-11 season.
Â
Walker has continued his 3-pointer shooting streak and has tallied at least one three in each game this season, and has achieved the feat in 30-straight games.
Towson, was led by John Davis who had just 10 points on the night, nine of those coming in the first half. The Tigers fall to 17-9 on the year and 8-5 in conference play.Â
Â
Jeremy Miller got Northeastern on the board first with a layup and the Huskies jumped out to a 10-5 lead five minutes into the game. The Huskies kept that advantage until the 6:09 mark in the first half when a Timajh Parker-Rivera layup gave Towson its first advantage in over 10 minutes. The Huskies went ahead on that Walker three, and four lead changes and two ties later, Northeastern entered the locker room with a 23-22 halftime lead behind two
T.J. Williams free throws.
Â
In the second half, Northeastern came out firing, connecting on seven of their first 11 shots in the first eight minutes of play, including three treys by Walker while Towson was 3-of-14 during that same time frame.
Â
During that span, the Huskies jumped out to an 11-point lead, its largest of the ball game, and though the Huskies would not notch a field goal for the next five minutes, continued to hang on to a seven-point lead thanks to Towson's shooting woes.
Â
With 2:55 left in the game, Mike Morsell, tallying Towson's only second 3-pointer of the game, brought Northeastern's lead to just one. But two forced turnovers, and four contested and missed shots during the final three minutes of action by the Tigers helped the Huskies hang on to the lead.
Â
With just 25 seconds to go in play,
Devon Begley was fouled and headed to the line with the Huskies up just one point. He drained the first of a one-and-one that hit the rim a couple times before falling in and sank the second free throw easily to give the Huskies a 3-point advantage and force Towson to try and tie the game from behind the arc. A feat they were unable to achieve.
Â
The Huskies are back in action at Matthews Arena on Saturday afternoon vs. Drexel. The game will tipoff at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Comcast Sports Net New England.
