Infographic (Game 2)ABILENE, Texas - Despite
Dustin Hunt throwing a complete game and
James Mulry nearly tossing seven full innings, the Northeastern baseball team lost a pair of one-run games against Abilene Christian, 1-0 and 4-3, during Saturday's doubleheader at Crutcher Scott Field.
Â
Hunt commanded the strike zone throughout the first game of the afternoon, racking up a season high, eight strikeouts, and walking none during a career-long, eight-inning outing. The junior from Andover, Massachusetts, had a perfect game broken up in the bottom of the fourth and went on to post seven straight scoreless frames, surrendering the eventual winning run by way of two hits during the eighth.
Â
Northeastern (3-3) tallied a season low, three hits, during the 1-0, game one loss to Abilene Christian (5-2).Â
Cam Hanley became the Huskies' first base runner after cracking a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, breaking the cycle of four consecutive one-two-three innings on offense.
Â
Second baseman
Keith Kelly went one-for-four out of the top spot in the NU batting order, while
Josh Treff laced his second double of the season during the eighth. Treff was the only Northeastern player who reached base multiple times, drawing a sixth-inning walk.
Â
The Wildcats' Garrett deMeyere matched Hunt's eight-inning day, striking out three, walking one, and allowing three hits. Nick Palacios put the Huskies down in order during the ninth, earning his third save of the season.
Â
Hunter Markwardt was the only player for either team that registered multiple hits, finishing with two base-knocks, including a double, and the lone RBI of the game.
Â
Contrary to game one, the Huskies' offense came to life during the second game of the doubleheader, which ended in favor of ACU, 4-3. Although Northeastern (3-4) outhit Abilene Christian (6-2), 7-6, the Huskies stranded eight runners on base, compared to the Wildcats' three.
Â
Ryan Solomon and
Shane Allen jumpstarted Northeastern's offense during the second, hammering back-to-back doubles through the left-center gap that left NU in front, 1-0.
Max Burt's well-placed grounder to short allowed Allen to move over to third, and after Treff had walked on five pitches, Koppens drove in Allen on an RBI single through the left side.
Â
Kelly kept the rally alive with a single down the left-field line that loaded the bases, but
David Hopkins was unable to bring the NU runners home.
Â
Mulry started his outing with seven straight outs, including two strikeouts, excusing himself from a fourth-inning jam by picking off Austin Call at second for the final out of the frame. However, Abilene Christian's small-ball and situational hitting dug into Mulry during the sixth as the Wildcats scored three runs on two hits and two NU errors, without a batted ball leaving the infield. Mulry's final line closed with 6.2 innings pitched, five hits, five strikeouts, three walks, and four runs, two of which were earned.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek relieved Mulry with two out and two on in the seventh, but the Wildcats' Aaron Draper connected on an RBI double that gave ACU a two-run lead.
Pat Madigan answered right back in the eighth, teeing off for his sixth career home run, the first hit homer hit by a Northeastern player this season.
Â
NU managed to send the tying run as far as second during the ninth, but the Huskies' late-game rally fell short of leveling the game.
Â
Northeastern will fight for a split in the four-game series when the two teams play the finale on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. EST.
