BOSTON  -- A three goal first period and a three-point night for Adam Gaudette set the tone for the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (10-13-5) on Monday in a 5-1 victory against No. 9/9 Harvard in the Beanpot consolation game.
 
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first period thanks to goals from Mike McMurtry, Gaudette and Dylan Sikura, and also received a goal from Zach Aston-Reese in the third period to help NU remain unbeaten in 10 of its last 11 games. Ryan Ruck was strong in goal for Northeastern, turning aside 19 saves to finish the tournament with a .943 save percentage (50 saves on 53 shots).
 
Ryan Donato scored the lone goal for the Crimson, while Michael Lackey made 23 saves in goal. NU outshot Harvard 28-20 for the game and won 34-of-59 face-offs. Northeastern's penalty killing unit held Harvard, which entered the game with the nation's top power play, to an 0-of-3 showing.
 
Goal descriptions:
• Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game as McMurtry netted his sixth goal of the year, and second in as many games. After McMurtry stole the puck in the neutral zone and dropped to Kevin Roy, Roy returned the puck to McMurtry for a shot from the slot that got over the blocker of Lackey for the score.
 
• The Huskies took a two-goal edge with 7:42 to play in the first period when Adam Gaudette buried his seventh goal of the season. With NU transitioning into the attacking zone, McMurtry carried the puck down the right side of the zone and sent a backhand pass into Gaudette joining the rush. Gaudette quickly received the pass and roofed a shot over Lackey's blocker.
 
• NU went up by three in the final minute of the first period when Sikura netted his ninth goal of the year. After taking a pass from Lincoln Griffin, John Stevens cut towards the net and fed Sikura with the puck at the opposite post for the easy tap-in past Lackey.
 
• Harvard cut the deficit to two with 9:02 left in the second period when Ryan Donato notched his seventh goal of the season, taking a clean face-off win by Luke Esposito between the hashmarks and firing a shot over Ruck's glove to make it 3-1.
 
• Aston-Reese put the Huskies back up by three with 13:45 to play in regulation when he knocked home his eighth of the year following some precision passing from Northeastern. After John Stevens fed Nolan Stevens with a pass at the left dot, Aston-Reese sped towards the net, took a pass from Nolan and one-timed a shot past Lackey for the score.
 
• Northeastern extended its lead to 5-1 with a power play marker from Gaudette with 9:52 left in the third period when he sent home his second of the evening off a cross-ice feed from Aston-Reese.
 
Stats of the game:
• Northeastern is now 36-65-0 all-time against Harvard and 20-23 in Beanpot games.
 
• NU finishes third in the Beanpot for the 17th time in team history.
 
• The Huskies are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 games (8-1-2), and collected their first win against a top-ten opponent this season.
 
• Roy's first period assist moved him into the top-25 of all-time Beanpot scoring with 12 points (seven goals, five assists). He is the first player since Boston College's Steven Whitney to reach the top-25.
 
• Ryan Ruck allowed two goals or fewer for the ninth straight game.
 
• John Stevens now has eight career Beanpot points (four goals, four assists). He's had a point in all six Beanpot games he's appeared in.
 
• Northeastern's three-goal first period was its most goals scored in any period in the Beanpot since the 2011 semifinals against Harvard.
 
• McMurtry has four goals and 12 assists in his last 11 games, while Gaudette has four goals and 10 assists in his last nine games.
 
The road ahead:
• Northeastern resumes Hockey East play on Friday night when the Huskies travel to Amherst, Mass. to battle Massachusetts. Puck drop is slated for 8:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on NESN and ASN.
