Stevens Goal ReactionCINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 9 Northeastern men's hockey team had its historic 2015-16 campaign come to an end in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional in a 6-2 loss to No. 3 North Dakota on Friday afternoon at U.S. Bank Arena.
Sophomore
Nolan Stevens gave the Huskies (22-14-5) the lead just over three minutes into the game, before North Dakota (31-6-4) responded with five unanswered goals from five different scorers to take a 5-1 lead through 40 minutes. Junior
Matt Benning pulled a goal back early in the final frame, before Drake Caggiula answered for the Fighting Hawks to round out the scoring.
Brock Boeser notched a goal and two assists to pace North Dakota, while Nick Schmaltz and Keaton Thompson each dished out a pair of helpers.
Freshman
Ryan Ruck turned aside 30 shots as the Fighting Hawks held a 36-26 advantage in shots on goal.

Nolan Stevens put Northeastern in front just 3:07 into the game, taking a headman feed from
Garret Cockerill and wristing a shot over the shoulder of UND netminder Cam Johnson (24 saves) from the top of the left circle.
• The Fighting Hawks equalized 2:36 later when Johnny Simonson found a loose puck in the crease behind Ruck and slammed the disc home to make it 1-1.
• North Dakota took the lead at the 10:22 mark of the opening frame when Tucker Poolman fired a wrister inside the left post from the top of the left circle to bump the score to 2-1.
• The Fighting Hawks bumped the cushion to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Luke Johnson with 3:05 to play in the first period. After Boeser's initial shot was blocked, Johnson found the rebound at the right of the net and fired the puck into the open cage.
• North Dakota picked up where it left off in the second period when Bryn Chyzyk collected the puck off an offensive-zone draw and snapped a shot past Ruck 5:11 into the middle frame to make it 4-1.
• Boeser then pushed the advantage to 5-1 when he cashed in on a Northeastern turnover with a pretty deke at the left of the cage just 1:54 later.
• The Huskies cut the deficit to 5-2 when senior
Mike McMurtry found Benning between the circles for a shot that beat Johnson over the glove at the 5:25 mark of the third period.
• North Dakota put the cherry on top with a pretty passing play to make it 6-2 when Schmaltz found Caggiula for a redirection in the low slot with 7:45 remaining.
Stats of the Game• Northeastern had its 13-game winning streak snapped, which was the longest in team history. It's 14-game unbeaten streak, also the longest such streak in program history, was snapped as well.
• Roy finished his career with 150 points, which is 11th all-time at Northeastern. His 65 goals are tied for 12th on the all-time last, while his 85 assists are tied for 15th.
• Ruck finished the season with a 2.38 goals against average, which is the second lowest in a single-season in team history. He also etched his name into the Northeastern record book in single-season save percentage (.909; 10th), games (37, tied for third) and minutes played (2185:24; fifth).
• Five Huskies (Aston-Reese, N. Stevens, J. Stevens, McMurtry, Gaudette) finished the year with at least 30 points. It's the first time since the 1993-94 season that Northeastern has had at least five skaters log at least 30 points.
• Northeastern finished the season with 241 assists, which ranks ninth in a single-season in team history, and 375 points (ninth in team history). NU also tied a program record for games played in a season (41).
• With his opening goal,
Nolan Stevens concluded the season with points in 13 of his last 14 games (10 goals, 13 assists during that span). Stevens potted his 20th goal of the season to wrap up the year as NU's leading goal scorer. It's the most goals in a season since Braden Pimm in 2013-14.
• Aston-Reese finished the year as the team's leading scorer with 43 points. His 29 assists were the most in a single-season since Jason Guerriero had 31 in 2004-05.
• With an assist on Benning's goal, McMurtry finished the year on a four-game point streak.
• The Huskies fell to 3-5-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
• NU dropped to 18-3-0 on the year when scoring the first goal.
Looking BackThe Huskies conclude their historic 2015-16 campaign with a 22-14-5 overall record. Northeastern won 13 of its final 14 games and claimed its first Hockey East championship since 1988 and first NCAA tournament berth since 2009. The Huskies' 22 wins rank as the third-most in a single season in program history.
