BALTIMORE – A second half comeback led by seniors
Quincy Ford and
David Walker pushed the sixth-seeded Northeastern men's basketball team past No. 3 Towson 71-60 on Saturday night in the quarterfinal round of the CAA Tournament at Royal Farms Arena.
Â
Ford rallied off 11 straight points for the Huskies from the 9:08 mark of the second half until 2:10 remained in play to help Northeastern to a 64-55 lead and the eventual win.
Â
The Huskies (18-14) advance on to face No. 2 seed UNCW in a rematch of last season's semifinal round. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on NBC Sports Network.
Â
Northeastern fans in Baltimore are encouraged to attend the pregame pep rally at the Pratt Street Ale House beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
Ford finished the game with 20 points, 15 of those coming in the second half, his sixth 20-point game for this season. Walker added 18 points, six assists and three rebounds to the total.
Â
T.J. Williams, who, coming off of the bench led the Huskies with seven first half points, finished with nine points and five assists and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field on the day.
Jimmy Marshall also contributed to the Huskies 16 bench points with seven of his own.
Â
Towson (20-12) was led by William Adala Moto who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Adala Moto scored 10 of Towson's first 12 points of the second half. Mike Morsell added 16, including a couple of big threes down the stretch.
Â
The Huskies got out to a quick 6-0 lead behind back-to-back treys by
Caleb Donnelly and
Jeremy Miller. Donnelly kick-started the game with a three for the second-straight game and the Miller three forced Towson to call a quick timeout.
Â
Following the timeout, Towson went on an 9-0 run to take its first lead 9-6 at the 13:24 mark. But the Huskies answered back with a Ford jumper and a trey by Walker to take an 11-9 lead less than minute later.
Â
The final 12 minutes of play saw three ties, seven lead changes and a pair of dunks by the Huskies including a drive through the lane by Marshall and a coast-to-coast drive finished with a slam by Williams.
Â
Marshall and Williams finished the half with a team-leading seven points as seven different Huskies recorded a point through the first 20 minutes of play.
Â
Zach Stahl started the scoring off with a layup to begin the half, his first basket of the game, and the Huskies never looked back, erasing the Towson lead with a Donnelly trey and later, on a Walker three, took their first lead, 37-36 with 17:04 left in the second half.
Â
After a couple of back-and-forth baskets to make it a 41-40 game in favor of the Huskies, Northeastern went on a 7-0 run capped by a
David Walker slam which forced the Tigers to call a timeout. The Huskies extended the run to 15-6 and took its first double-digit lead of the game, 56-46 with 8:56 left in the ballgame on a Ford trey.
Â
A Morsell three for Towson cut the lead to nine with 7:07 left, but following that bucket, both teams went scoreless over the following three and a half minutes as the Huskies hung on to a 58-49 lead.
Â
Towson tried to chip away, but for every Tiger bucket, the Huskies matched on the other end. Despite starting the first half off 2-of-8 from the free throw line, Northeastern finished the game out going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to earn the 11-point victory.
Â
Northeastern will return to action against No. 2 seed UNCW on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
