HighlightsNORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Despite outshooting No. 3 seed Boston University by a 57-29 margin, the second-seeded Northeastern women's hockey team came up one goal short in a 4-3 setback against the Terriers in the WHEA semifinals on Saturday at Lawler Rink.
BU netminder Erin O'Neil made a career-high 54 saves–the second-most in a WHEA semifinal game in league history–to backstop the Terriers (23-13-2) to their fifth consecutive appearance in the league championship game.Â
Sophomore
Shelby Herrington scored two goals, including an extra-attacker strike with 1:05 remaining in the third to pull NU (28-8-1) within one. Herrington nearly tied the game seconds later with a pretty deflection in the low slot, but O'Neil was up to the task with a beautiful glove save through heavy traffic.
Sophomore
Ainsley MacMillan also scored for Northeastern, while classmate
Denisa Krizova dished out two assists.
Goal Recaps• The Huskies struck first at the 5:06 mark of the first period when junior
Hayley Scamurra gained the offensive zone on the left wing and tossed a pass through the high slot to MacMillan, who was trailing the play. The sophomore gathered the puck and unleashed a quick wrister that slipped through the pads of O'Neil to make it 1-0 Huskies.Â
• BU answered back four minutes later when Rebecca Leslie sniped a shot past
Brittany Bugalski (25 saves) from between the circles on the power play at the 10:55 mark of the opening frame.Â
• The Terriers took their first lead of the game eight minutes into the second stanza when Jordan Juron dropped a pass to Victoria Bach for a wrister that found its way through the pads of Bugalski from the top of the left circle to make it 2-1 BU.Â
• Northeastern tied the game just 1:51 later when Krizova tossed a shot towards the net for Herrington to deflect home inside the left post from between the circles.Â
• The back-and-forth action continued when the Terriers reclaimed the advantage at 3-2 on a seeing-eye shot by Kayla Tutino from the right point at the 15:09 mark of the second period.Â
• The Terriers added a key insurance goal when Alexis Crossley skated in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and roofed a backhand to make it 4-2 with 9:06 remaining in the third.Â
• Herrington cut the lead to 4-3 with a power-play goal with 1:05 remaining when she deflected home a
Kendall Coyne shot amidst heavy traffic in front.Â
