2015-16 Highlight Video
BOSTON – After helping lead the Northeastern men's ice hockey team to its first Hockey East championship since 1988, a pair of Huskies collected accolades from the conference on Wednesday. Senior captain
Kevin Roy was named the Warrior Hockey Player of the Month, while freshman netminder
Ryan Ruck picked up Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month honors.
Over the final two months of the 2015-16 season, Roy helped Northeastern complete a historic turnaround in its run to the Hockey East Tournament title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. The Huskies' captain led Hockey East over March and April with 10 points (five goals and five assists) in seven games. He led the league in tournament scoring with nine points (5g, 4a) and was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.
After finishing one of the most successful careers in team history, Roy inked a two-year entry level contract with the Anaheim Ducks on April 8. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native appeared in 130 games throughout his four-year career, posting 150 points (65 goals, 85 assists). He ranks 11th all-time in career scoring at Northeastern, tied for 12th in career goals and tied for 15th in career assists. Roy was a two-time Hobey Baker Award candidate (2014, 2015) while at Northeastern, in addition to a two-time Hockey East All-Star.
Despite being hampered by an injury that forced him to miss 12 games, Roy returned to the lineup in late January during the team's most successful stretches. Individually, Roy finished the season with 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) in 29 games. Northeastern was 12-4-2 when he recorded a point and 7-0-0 when he scored a goal.
Ruck, meanwhile, backboned Northeastern to a 6-1-0 record in March and April, launching his team in the NCAA Tournament. He kicked out 169 shots in 437:56 of time en route to setting the Hockey East Tournament single-season record for wins by a goaltender with six victories. He won six contests in a row in March and April before bowing out to eventual NCAA national champion North Dakota in the NCAA Tournament.
Ruck went 20-11-4 in 35 starts as a freshman, the third most victories in a season in team history and a team record 2.36 goals against average. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native also cracked Northeastern single-season record book in games played (37; tied for third), save percentage (.909; ninth), minutes (2185:24; fifth) and shutouts (two; tied for seventh). After starting his career 0-9-2 between the pipes, he responded by going 20-2-4 in his final 26 starts.
The Huskies finished the 2015-16 season with 22 victories, the third most in a single-season in team history. NU rebounded from a 1-11-2 start to finish the season 22-3-3, including a 13-game winning streak that was the longest in program history and a 14-game unbeaten streak (13-0-1) that was also the longest in team history.
During the stretch of success, the Huskies went 10-0-1 in conference games, which was the longest unbeaten streak in league play since Northeastern joined Hockey East at the start of the 1984-85 season, and catapulted the Huskies from 12th place to sixth place in the league standings. Northeastern's 19 wins since January were the most in the nation this season and tied for the most in team history (19 wins in 1981-82).
