Post-game Interview
BROOKLINE, Mass. – With the bases loaded in a tie game during the bottom of the ninth,
Cam Walsh delivered the game-winning single straight to center as the Northeastern baseball team walked off as 2-1 winners against Central Connecticut State on Friday at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Walsh's RBI knock capped off what was an eventful ninth inning for both sides, beginning during the top half.
Mike Fitzgerald's bid to protect
Aaron Civale's 1-0 victory came to an end two pitches into the frame as CCSU's Mitch Guilmette homered to right, leveling the game at 1-1. Fitzgerald would recover and worked NU out of the stanza, forcing Connor Fitzsimons to ground into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play turned by
Keith Kelly,
Max Burt, and
Jake Farrell.
Â
Kelly led off the home half of the ninth with a single to center and was pushed into scoring position after
Pat Madigan drew a five-pitch walk. Following a CCSU pitching change that swapped Stanley Wolpiuk in for Michael Pastore, Kelly slid safely into third upon
Josh Treff's sacrifice bunt, loading the bases. Walsh proceeded to bee line a 1-0 pitch to center that was uncontested by the Blue Devils' outfielder John Lippincott, allowing Kelly to score the winning run.
Â
Seven scoreless innings by Northeastern (20-19) starter
Aaron Civale were an understatement to his career high, 12 strikeouts, on Friday. Civale struck out at least one CCSU batter during each inning he threw, collecting three whiffs during the sixth inning alone. He retired Central Connecticut State (18-22) in order four times, walked none, and never faced more than four batters in a single inning.
Â
Pat Madigan broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh, teeing off on his fourth homer of the year to left center.
Mason Koppens went two-for-four out of the second spot in the NU lineup, while
Jake Farrell plugged two hits out of the eight hole.
Â
David Hopkins and Treff combined to drop three sacrifice hits for the Huskies, tying a season high. Hopkins bunted Farrell to second base twice during the third and eighth innings, while Treff's bunt in the ninth successfully moved the winning run up 90 feet from second base to third.
Â
With the exception of a one-out single,
Tyler Robinson tossed a flawless eighth inning of relief, benefitting from Treff throwing out Lippincott at second to end the frame.
Â
The Blue Devils' starter, Casey Brown, struck out seven during eight full innings on the mound for CCSU, walking two and allowing five NU hits.
Â
Northeastern and Central Connecticut State will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, consisting of a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning game. Prior to first pitch at 11 a.m., the Huskies will welcome back and honor the members of their 1966 College World Series team during a special on-field ceremony at Friedman Diamond.
