BROOKLINE, Mass. – Returning to Friedman Diamond to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their College World Series run, the 1966 Northeastern baseball team was on hand to witness not one but two victories by the 2016 squad as NU swept Saturday's doubleheader against Central Connecticut State, 8-4 and 7-6.

Before the home side took the field in game one, members of the 1966 Huskies were welcomed back to Friedman Diamond by Northeastern athletic director Peter Roby and head coach Mike Glavine, hearing their names introduced one-by-one just like during their playing days. Dick Paster, left fielder of the Omaha-bound Huskies, threw out the ceremonial first pitch, a game ball rescued from one of Northeastern's two games in the 1966 College World Series.

Both classes of Huskies then stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the first-base line as the national anthem sounded through the speakers of the John "Tinker" Connelly Pavilion, named after the late manager of the "most surprising team in Northeastern's baseball history."

GAME ONE: HUSKIES WIN BATTLE OF CROOKED NUMBERS

Mitch Guilmette stole Dustin Hunt's thunder during the top of the first inning, swinging a triple to center beyond the reach of Mason Koppens. Dean Lockery brought home the first run of the game for Central Connecticut State (18-23) on an RBI single, three batters before Connor Fitzsimons belted a three-run homer to left, sending the Blue Devils in front, 4-0.

Despite surrendering four runs on three hits in the first, Hunt still managed to collect three strikeouts and fell into a rhythm as the game progressed. The junior fanned four CCSU batters in a row between the first and second and during six innings pitched, finished with nine strikeouts, one fewer than his season high.

Cam Walsh broke up Brandon Fox's no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth and moved over to third on a base hit by first baseman Nick Fanneron. Max Burt ended Fox's day with an RBI single to left, but Koppens delivered an RBI single as well up the middle, bringing NU to within two runs at 4-2. Charlie McConnell rounded out a three-run frame for the Huskies with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Burt from third.

Trailing by a run in a seven-inning game, Northeastern (21-19) shifted its offense into overdrive during the bottom of the sixth. Zach Perry provided the first big hit of the inning, scooting Pat Madigan into scoring position with a double down the left-field line. After Walsh had walked on four pitches, Fanneron plated the tying run on a base hit to left before Burt brought home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded again following a walk to Koppens, Nolan Lang blasted a pinch-hit double to left center, collecting three RBIs and solidifying the Huskies' game one victory, 8-4.

GAME TWO: TREFF'S TRIPLE HELPS NU COMPLETE SWEEP

Falling behind, 1-0, in the top of the second, Northeastern (22-19) responded with their third crooked number of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring four runs on three hits. After an infield error by the Blue Devils' second baseman prolonged the Huskies' time at the plate, David Hopkins came through with a two-RBI single out of the ninth spot in the NU order. McConnell added an RBI single through the right side, scoring Hopkins, who had stolen second on the previous play.

Josh Treff made it home easily on McConnell's fourth-inning single up the middle, sending the Huskies in front, 5-1. Later that inning, NU upped its advantage to 6-1 after a double steal by McConnell and Koppens forced an errant throw by the CCSU catcher.

Central Connecticut State (18-24) would orchestrate a comeback, scoring two runs off James Mulry in the fifth to reduce the Huskies' lead to 6-3. The Blue Devils continued their resurgence and fought back to tie the game at 6-6, plaguing NU reliever Nate Borges with two home runs.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Treff made excellent contact on a 2-0 pitch, coming inches away from a solo homer but contently settling for a one-out triple. After Hopkins was hit with a pitch, McConnell registered his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, scoring Treff to put Northeastern ahead, 7-6.

Mike Fitzgerald needed just nine pitches to retire CCSU in the ninth, picking up his seventh save of the season in the process.
