Baseball's Civale named Third Team All-American

Collegiate Baseball release  |  2016 Louisville Slugger All-American Teams

TUCSON, Ariz. – Ranked among the top 15 Division I pitchers this season in innings pitched (second), strikeouts (seventh), and ERA (13th) as of May 29, Northeastern pitcher Aaron Civale was named to the 2016 Louisville Slugger All-American Third Team on Thursday, as announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Declared CAA Co-Pitcher of the Year on May 24, Civale was one of four conference players to receive All-American status. The six-foot-two right-hander joined UNCW catcher Nick Feight (First Team), Elon second baseman Nick Zammarelli (Third Team), and fellow Co-Pitcher of the Year, UNCW's Ryan Foster (Third Team).

He is the first Northeastern player to earn a spot on a Louisville Slugger All-American Team since Jason Vosler was named a Freshman All-American in 2012.

Civale enjoyed a record-breaking year as the Huskies' Friday starter in 2016, ascending to the top of the NU single-season strikeout and innings pitched lists with respective marks of 121 and 114.1. The East Windsor, Connecticut, native went the distance and threw seven innings or more during each of his 15 starts, winning nine games (9-3) while boasting an ERA of 1.73. More impressive was Civale's 8.07 strikeout-to-walk ratio (15 walks), placing him fifth among all qualifying Division I hurlers.

Reverting back to his high school role as a starting pitcher in 2016, Civale's 114.1 innings pitched amounted to more than each of his previous two seasons combined, yet he remarkably allowed fewer earned runs (22) than both of his 2014 and 2015 campaigns together (28). In doing so, he slashed his career ERA from 3.22 to 2.34, ranking him ninth all-time in the Northeastern record book.

Upon conclusion of the 2016 CAA tournament, Civale and NU second baseman David Hopkins were both named to the conference's All-Tournament Team. Civale was also selected to attend the NEIBA's 42nd annual Joe Walsh All-Star Game in Worcester, Massachusetts (June 5), as a member of the University (Division I) All-Stars, along with Northeastern closer Mike Fitzgerald.
